TripAdvisor was founded in February 2000. The site was acquired by Interactive Corporation in 2004. TripAdvisor claims to be the largest travel community in the world with more than 10 million reviews and opinions in total.
The site provides loads of information about vacation destinations and accommodations.
If you are planning a holiday, you simply enter preferred dates and destination and TripAdvisor will suggest the best accommodations or things to do, based on the reviews and ratings given by other users. You can also search specific hotels or attractions to find out if they are worth a visit. The "rants and raves" section shows the best and the worst reviewed travel destinations.
What are the differences to other applications?
The service is one of the largest communities with reviews, movies, photos, ratings and maps. Not only accommodations are reviewed but also attractions and other things to do during a vacation.

The pages are crammed with a lot of information including lots of sponsored links. This makes it difficult to navigate at first.
