What is the history and popularity of the application?
Orkut was founded in 2004 as a side-project created by a Google employee. While it was originally aimed at a global market, it soon gained a large following in Brazil, India and Iran, where it has become one of the most popular social networking sites.The site has all the usual features that you would expect from a social networking site, such as the ability to display personal information (and hide it from certain people) and interests, the ability to post videos and photos as well as a blog. As Google also owns YouTube, the integration between YouTube and Orkut is excellent, and posting YouTube videos to your profile or blog is simple. You can also join community groups based around shared interests and browse lists of friends of friends, to see if you can find anybody you know.
What are the differences to other applications?
Orkut's major selling point is its association with Google. This means that it is hosted on a reliable and lightning-fast Google server, with a slick user interface to boot. As with many social networking sites, it has developed a following in certain countries. If you are looking to reconnect with friends in Brazil or India, then Orkut should be your first port of call.
How does the application look and feel to use?
Orkut uses pastel colors that are easy on the eye, and has a slick menu system with easy to understand icons. You can tell that a professional approach was taken during the design process of the website interface.
How does the registration process work?
During the registration process you will be asked for basic information, such as your name and e-mail. You will also be required to specify your full date of birth, which is normal for a social networking site. If you already have a Google account, then you can use it to log into Orkut, although you will still be required to specify your date of birth, if you already haven't done so.
What does it cost to use the application?
Orkut is a free service, and we couldn't find any overly visible advertising on the site at the time of use, so the user experience isn't degraded in this respect.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Orkut is a very fast, reliable and fully featured social networking site. It is especially recommended if you have many Brazilian or Indian friends.
