Yahoo Mail
What can you use the application for?
Yahoo mail is an online email application. You can send and receive email through an advanced interface.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
Yahoo mail was launched in 1997, the same year they also acquired Rocket Mail from Four11. In 2007 Yahoo launched a redesigned website with a quick AJAX interface. Yahoo mail currently is one of the most popular email applications.
What are the differences to other applications?
The difference with other email applications is the unlimited storage space and the integration with Yahoo Messenger, Calendar, search engine, etc.
How does the application look and feel to use?
The website looks a bit dated but loads quickly. The welcome screen shows a Yahoo homepage instead of your inbox. This might help to get Yahoo more pageviews but it is annoying when you just want to read your email.
How does the registration process work?
To register for Yahoo Mail you need a Yahoo ID. To sign up for one you need to give your birth date and postal code.
What does it cost to use the application?
Yahoo Mail is ad supported. These animated graphic ads are displayed at the right side of the screen. In the beginning they are pretty distracting and you can't turn them off.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Yahoo mail is a good choice to use as an email application. Especially when you also use their homepage or Flickr. If you want more frequent functionality updates and a cleaner interface you might also consider Gmail.
