Yahoo! Calendar
What can you use the application for?
Yahoo! Calendar is an online calendar and task management application
brought to you by our second favorite search engine (Just can't beat
Google), Yahoo. Yahoo strives to bring a simple, yet helpful
interface for keeping track of all of your to-dos and upcoming events.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
While Yahoo! Calendar was rolled out back in 1998 (long before the
latest and greatest in technology), little has changed over the past
decade. The site is clean and easy to navigate. While we're sure
that most people would jump ship to a nicer looking or more
feature-rich application, Yahoo has the advantage that they are Yahoo.
All of their users can quickly access their calendar -- and Yahoo
builds in to their other applications right into the calendar.
What are the differences to other applications?
It seems that Yahoo is trying to simplify their online applications.
With their calendar application, they offer a "Quick Add" box. This
is similar to Google's quick add feature except that this one actually
provides the date and time options at the quick add step. This can be
helpful as typing 7pm, as some applications would have you do, can
lead to the time not being read properly. This means one less step or
correction is necessary after the quick add. In addition, because
this is a Yahoo product, they let the user tie into their other
applications. Time Guides allow a user to overlay their financial
news, sporting events, holidays and more directly over their calendar.
This can be extremely helpful if you plan events around when your
stock prices rise or fall or when the big NFL game is more important
than anything else on your plate.
How does the application look and feel to use?
The page design for Yahoo! Calendar is fast to load and very easy on
the eyes. When a user first logs in, they are presented with their
current day. Yahoo allows customization of the look and feel of each calendar. For example, a user can choose to start with a week, month
or event view. User's can specify their work hours to make adding new
events easier and setup reminders and notifications for events so they
never miss their nephew's birthday or spouse's hair appointments.
How does the registration process work?
Registering for Yahoo! Calendar is as easy as registering for anything
Yahoo. Simply setup a new account by choosing a username, password
and fill in a few personal details and you're ready to go.
What does it cost to use the application?
Yahoo does not charge for their calendar service. While they do offer
premium features for other Yahoo services, no pricing could be found
for a user to become a "premium" calendar user. Most likely there are
no additional features to sign up for at this time.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Yahoo! Calendar is great for someone that uses Yahoo for their other
services. If your email, horoscopes, news and searching is all done
at Yahoo already, it's simple to start using them for your calendar
and task management needs. If you are looking for a more Web 2.0ish
web site or extra features (i.e online syncing to your Blackberry or
color coded calendar entries), there are better services out there.
