Digg
What can you use the application for?
Digg lets users vote on web pages they like. The stories that get a lot of votes are 'dugg' and move to the frontpage. Digg has a steady supply of interesting stories in many categories.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
Digg started as an experiment of three friends late 2004 and went live in December that year. First, the focus was more on technology and nerdy topics but as more users joined, the scope became more general. Currently it is the top social bookmarking site.
What are the differences to other applications?
Digg is mostly about the social process and entertainment of finding new sites. Compared to sites with editorial review the content suffers from sensationalism. Compared to other social bookmarking sites it has more features and more users.
How does the application look and feel to use?
Digg has a distinctive interface with an iconic blue 'digg button'. This button is also found at many content sites to promote digging their stories. The Digg interface is a bit more cluttered than most other bookmarking sites.
How does the registration process work?
Most users that digg stories are registered to take part in the community action. You need to enter a lot of information in order to join, including a valid email address, birthday and your city (an address is not required). After confirming the email you can let Digg search your online address books to find out whether your friends already joined the community or not. So far there have been no reports of Digg spamming your contacts so this should be safe. As a last step most users also upload an icon so other people can identify their posts.
What does it cost to use the application?
Digg is advertising supported. They have two banners on each page. The RSS feed is advertisement-free and a great way to keep up to date.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Digg is a great social hangout to find the latest and greatest the internet has to offer. If you're looking for an efficient bookmarking tool you'd better look somewhere else though.
