YourNextPresent is an application designed to assist users in choosing a book, movie, TV show, or game for a gift based on the likes of the recipient.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

The application was founded by Robert Boland and Marko Dukic who also founded YourNextRead, YourNextFilm, and YourNextGame.

What are the differences to other apps?

YourNextPresent formulates gift recommendations on input from other users. Simply enter something that the recipient likes and the application generates suggestions.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

It is interesting to note that the game recommendations are video games for various gaming systems. This may be disappointing to those hoping for board games or card games to be included.

This application can be somewhat frustrating to use. Each search offers several results and the user selects one to “match” and find new ideas. Unfortunately, the results are rather limited and not very creative. A search using Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling yielded the remaining books in the series, Little Women, and Mere Christianity – a book about Christian radio lectures in 1943 for books. Films recommended Dexter – a VERY adult Showtime network series, a LeapFrog Math Circus DVD for small children, and Fringe – a science fiction series. None of these, other than the remaining books in the series, are even remotely good ideas for gifts. A search based on the video game “Bejeweled” yielded the Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy and John Madden’s Badasses.

The application worked extremely slowly and some items did not load at all.

How does the registration process work?

Registration requires an email, password, username, and age group. A confirmation email is sent to activate a user’s account.

What does it cost to use the application?

YourNextPresent is completely free to use. The site asks that you use the links from their site to Amazon as they are an affiliate.

Who would you recommend the application to?

This application is not recommended, especially if searching for age appropriate items for children. As evidenced by our Harry Potter search, users may not realize the suggested items are not for children.
