What can you use the application for?
Xanga is one of the many social networking sites that are available on the internet. This site allows you to create audio, blogs, and videos along with posting photos. It’s very similar to many of the other popular social networking sites such as Friendster, Bebo and of course Myspace. It’s an extremely popular site and mainly attracts teenagers; it’s particularly popular in Asia. The Xanga site is an online community which stores a number of journals and diaries. It’s very easy to register and start your own diary so that you can keep your friends informed of what you’re up to. You can even use the site as a platform to meet new friends. The word Xanga is apparently made up and should be pronounced Zanguh. It was chosen because it was short, catchy and appeals to Asian countries. In certain parts of the world the word Xanga is being adopted as an everyday word much in the same way that Google has been.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
Xanga was founded in 1999 by Marc Ginsburg, John Hiller, and Dan Huddle. The site is very popular, especially in Asia. There are hundreds of new posts per day, with only a few minutes between them. It’s one of the most popular social networking sites in Asia at the moment.
What are the differences to other applications?
Xanga is in effect pretty much the same as any other social networking site. It does have its own currency however, which are known as credits. These can be used to buy or purchase various things for your account. The most common thing to buy with these credits are minis, these are small animations that can be attached to comments. The ability to register your mobile phone is not unique but is pretty useful.
How does the application look and feel to use?
Xanga has a nice clean design to it and it’s very easy to use. There are quite a few adverts but these don’t cause any real problem. Adding a blog, or photos is as easy as clicking the right buttons at the top of the page when you log in. You can also easily edit your theme and various other settings from the main console without doing anything difficult. Posting a blog post is very easy; it loads up in a window similar to a word processor which makes hammering out your 10 cents worth very easy. The tabs at the top of the window also make it very easy to add multimedia content such as videos and photos. It’s even possible to use Xanga on your mobile phone if you register the number on the website.
How does the registration process work?
Registering for an account on Xanga is just as you would expect, it doesn’t take long at all and isn’t too painful. When signing up you will need to make sure that you accept the terms and conditions. In the next step you will then have to choose a theme and create a welcome post. There are loads of themes, just click the next button to look at more. Once you have done that you are logged straight into your account. You will be offered the option to search for your friends, although this is not compulsory. Once you have registered you are free to make comments and make your own posts if you like.
What does it cost to use the application?
Using Xanga is free, which is to be expected by looking at the other similar applications. There are plenty of adverts on the site which aren’t too bad but they do get in the way sometimes. There are also premium accounts that cost $4 per month, the premium accounts include much more storage space. There is also a premium plus account that costs $7 per month; this comes with unlimited storage space.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Xanga seems to be very popular with many Asian countries; there seem to be two versions of the site. One in English and another aimed at Hong Kong. As Xanga works pretty much the same as any other social networking site, including My Space it’s suitable for virtually anyone. If you don’t like MySpace for some reason then Xanga might be a great option for you.
