What can you use the app for?
Wix is a WebTop publisher; it can be used to create all sorts of internet based content. Although it’s most commonly used to create websites it can also be used for blogs, widgets and also my space layouts. It has a number of my space templates to create high quality my space templates. All of this web content can then be uploaded anywhere you like. Wix makes incorporating professional flash animations and publications easy without needing to learn any code. You don’t need to invest in any complicated or expensive applications; you can use wix to do absolutely everything. Wix also makes it easy to promote your site as all sites created are SEO friendly.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
Wix was founded in September 2006, and is one of the oldest online WebTop publishing platforms still available. The company is based in New York and it has received a total of $8.5 million in funding from a number of different sources. Similar sites include Webnode, Weebly, and Sprout. In March 2011, Wix raised $40 million from Insight Venture Partners, DAG ventures, Benchmark Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners and Mangrove Capital Partners. So far Wix has managed to receive $61 million in funding.
What are the differences to other apps?
There are a number of online web design applications; however unlike many of these Wix also makes it possible to create a number of different forms of publications. All of these can contain flash based presentations and they are very easy to create. The websites are very professional looking and much better than the other systems on offer.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
Wix is very easy to use and the design of the site is very clean and professional. Compared to many of the other similar sites, this one has a modern feel about it. It also has a number of tutorials and instructions which make creating your first site or online publication really easy. You don’t even need to know anything about creating websites, and you don’t need to learn any code. The website however is a little slow to use, but this shouldn’t be a problem once you are logged in.
How does the registration process work?
Creating an account on Wix is very easy; you have to enter your email address, choose a username and enter a password. You will need to confirm your email address by following the instructions in the email that’s sent to you. After you have done this you will then be walked through the process of creating your account and building your first sites.
What does it cost to use the application?
Wix is free; however they also have premium accounts where you can pay for additional features. You will sign up using a free account, and you are able to upgrade your account whenever you want to. If you don’t need any of these advanced features then you can continue using the site for free, the features on offer do change from time to time so it’s a good idea to check the website.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Wix is a fantastic site for anyone that wants to build flash websites without having to learn how to write websites from scratch. There’s no need to learn HTML or anything complicated, all you need to do is drag things around. The system is free, stable and very sophisticated. Even the wix website is made using wix, which goes to show just how professional the results are.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with the comments below. Cubender or Set My Site are definitely better choices. Call me crazy, but I even think Homestead is better than Wix, hahah Wix's sites are slow and not search friendly. And the fact that you can't view them on a smart phone because their flash is amazing to me. Wix has got to be crazy! Outdated!

Compare Wix to Cubender here: http://www.appappeal.com/app/cubender Use Wix to create dancing animations. Use Cubender to create a real website.

I also had a wix website for a while and I absolutely could not stand it. It constantly took way too long to load, the mobile versions are horrible, and even when the pages did load, they scrolled really choppy. Plus software is clunky and support is awful. You know you should look into the guys who I eventually hired to do my new site: www.setmysite.com – these guys build you a custom website from scratch, no design fees, and the monthly is still pretty low considering you get the website built for you and they do all the updates for you, $29 a month. Take a look at the site they built for me all based off my direction and ideas: www.lukmar.com – I couldn’t be happier. Good luck with your website and good riddance wix!

Not only does their customer service suck, the websites SUCK. The flash loads super slow and is not SEO friendly. I used Wix for about 8 months til I decided to give them the finger. I reached my Wix limits and decided to go with SetMySite.com They're a little bit more expensive, but it's totally worth it. They built my site, update it for me, host it, and provide email for $30 a month. And it's month to month. No more Wix for me.

I love this site. The only issue I have with this site is the slow slow slow loading times. I rate this as one of the best sites, but I do dislike the fact that you have to pay to put google analytic on their site which is ridiculous as google analytic is free. Go figure!!!

I prefer easywebcontent.com . Have 2 sites I manage fully. HTML site my webdesigner created few years ago who went belly up; now I use the HTML editor from them to update my site daily. I decided last month to also create a new site with the Easy WebContent Site Builder and damn do I love it. Can see my site on mobile devices fine and no complaints on speed.

I agree with you Steve on this matter though i am grateful to have a user friendly platform to work off. The only set back is that I am building an online business presence and it is too slow loading up which would not go well with Google search engine. :( So now I need to figure out how to transfer all this work of mine to a fast loading server....any thoughts on this would be grately appreciated...and ty Wix for giving me free online building though my disappointment is after my upgrade to premium it made no differance in speed :(

I wouldn't recommend WIX for professional use. Not only are the sites slow as molasses for both creators and users (and no, once you register and log in it does not speed up), they do not allow for importing formatted text from Word or Excel documents (or even Textedit, Wordpad or Notepad). So, if you have a lot of information to share then WIX is not for you. It's better for Johnny to post his stamp collection or grandma to show off her quilts.

Wow. What a F*d up site. I bought premium and built a fantastic looking site in about a week. HOWEVER, what good is a site if page loads take forever. Search the net and you will see how many complains there are from users unhappy about slow load times. I literally did everything I could to optimize my site, and it still ran unevenly. Parts of the page would load fast and others would take 10 or 15 secs. They should be embarrassed to offer such a poor product. Add insult to injury, WIX has absolutely no billing support. Just an email.

Wix really seems to be the best and easiest site builder, until you discover how limited the program really is. The more flash features you use the slower your site loads. Customer support is a joke. They used to have a great user forum where you got instantly help from other users. Now all answers are like scripted and really don't help at all. Most companies that grow improve themselves, Wix does exactly the opposite.

I so agree with Paul Benson. I can't hold of anyone. I am so disappointed. Spent ages building the site and then I have had to upgrade twice and I am still stuck with the watermarks. On the website, in brackets, somewhere it then states I have to upgrade to the ecommerce package, which I don't want. I am very unhappy.

Wix has the worst customer support team I have ever encountered. I bought the wix premium package. Every time I call support about a problem I get brushed off. They either are completely unknowable about their software or just plain don't care about their customers. I would NOT recommend their product to ANYONE!!!

Just look at that stupid picture of Loki. For 3 days now I have not been able to log in to my site.Loki why don't you get that silly cigar out of your mouth, get up off your ass and fix these damn servers.Oh! I can answer my own question. You are either to lazy or you just don't give a damn.If indeed Wix has raised 62 million over the last 6 years you sure have some Shitty servers. With out a doute your co-workers are no better than you or they would take up your slack.I have never in my whole life seen such shitty support as this.I know why you offer free web hosting now, your hosting won't work half of the time.My site is copyrighted and I will get some of that 62 million you have claimed to have raised if it is infringed upon.

"I bought a domain from godaddy and want to forward the same to my wix site.. How do it do it ?" To use your domain you need to at least buy the cheapest Wix package, pointing your domain is found in the Wix editor in "site settings". You need to point your domain from GoDaddy at Wix too. Wix has instructions on what you need to add to GoDaddy. All of this is only if you don't need to use your own domain, the Wix site 100% functional, and is free. I tired Jigsy.. recently relaunched after some financial issues that shut them down, so to use them for a business site could be a bad idea for now. Jigsy was far from easy to learn editor when compared to Wix at my first try. First time I tried Jigsy, didn't get too far too fast and did anything that looked as good as Wix. Jigsy forces you to make your decision within 15-days and then cuts your account off. Wix can be free for as long as you like. On the good side, Jigsy is HTML pages so they load super fast, if you have the patience to learn editor. I'll stay with Wix for now. "It isn't free. Unless I am missing something. You have to pay if you want to publish your web design don't you?" Yes it's free if, unless you want to use your own domain. When you design a site and save, it's live. You can block it from search engines while you develop it or if you want to keep it with a select group of viewers (we do this at our hotel, so only our WIFI users see the our news and information site.) We have a paid Wix site ($100-year) with our domain as our main selling/advertising tool.). One negative with Wix isn't Wix's fault. Wix Flash websites can't be seen on Apple computers... why???? because Mr Steve Jobs (Apple CEO) doesn't want to pay Adobe for the privilege..keeping his costs down on his already overpriced Apple computers.. Blackberry and other tablet computers are offering Flash as a reason to not buy an Apple product. In time Apple with bite the bullet (or the Apple?) and offer Flash to keep up with competition.

Making sites with Wix is great. Getting customer service is hopeless, not great if your site is for a client. I had my site unlinked from my .com, I had wix ads appear on it after they had taken a payment from my account, I had them completely misunderstand and not answer my questions time and time and time again - always, very short unhelpful responses, or 'look at our questions and answers section' which NEVER answer any of the questions that I have, because my questions are usually about cock ups that they've made. Driving me potty, I've been close to tears with frustration. I was going to design clients sites on wix, but now I'm just sitting down and learning how to code and use flash! I'll make my own, it's a pain now, but it will make my life easier and cheaper in the long run! TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE customer service.

I've just used it for the first time for a simple website and am very happy. It needs development - easy drop down menus, for example, would be great, and a blogging module - but it's much less grief than most similar offerings. One warning - it won't let you upload a file with an apostrophe in the filename, but once you know that it's not a problem. Matthew

Hi Everyone, I`d just like to say i`ve had fun building my website on wix. Yes, there`s been a couple of hiccups on the way and there`s a lot to learn but in the end if you put the effort into understanding what`s happening it will work for you. Maybe my website will convince you to give it a try ... i tried others but none were as fun as wix. www.africatourplanner.com Cheers Paul

Wix says they are working to make their sites available to smart phones, so I assume a I-pad would be included in that. I definitely hope this happens soon. Wix is actively making changes, as I do see changes over the past number of months I've been with them. Both major and minor changes in the editor occurring. Yes, there is only one saved copy, so when you save, you are live. What I've read here a lot are people saving their changes, with errors, and panicking that there is no backup to retrieve. The lock feature should be used to prevent objects from moving around by accident. I would think this is probably the biggest Wix user mistake. Once you are sure, you are happy with positioning, lock it and move to the next object. It is very easy to select the wrong un-locked object and slide it out of position. Maybe the customer service person was too frank with their comment, or was just trying to be funny, but they are right based on how Wix is set-up. If you are editing and something goes wrong and will "undo" will not fix it, simply close the window and start over. Make changes in small steps, saving to prevent a lot of work needing to be redone. A fast internet connection can also reduce editing errors too… waiting too long for the change makes one impatient and then start doing too much that needs to be undone. One reality, is for $100 a year if prepaid, no software to buy or upgrade, able to edit anywhere with a internet connection, customer support both on-line and phone.. an issue with Wix here or there, really isn't breaking the bank. Microsoft has a successful business model to ship defective product on a regular basis (such as ME & Vista), then they obsolete it, and force users to upgrade to their next defective product.. an example being many Vista/XP applications will not run under Windows 7. With all of this said, Microsoft still seems to being doing very well for themselves... I looked at many of the other website provders and they are much more expensive. The only one I may look at is GoDaddy as their service is worth a try, but Wix does work, no manual really needed, think logically then no extra help should be required and for $100 a year or absolutely free.. what a deal..!

I really love the design features of Wix and how easy it is to create a beautiful site. But I'm still looking because: no Iphone/Ipad compatibility, each page length has to be the same, not very good form building capability, no backup feature, no access to the code. When I called customer service to ask how you backup your site I was told 'just don't save it until you like it' LOL! I can't decide whether they were being snotty or stupid - probably snotty. Too bad, because I really do like the 'flash'. Does anyone have suggestions for a builder with pizazz that doesn't have these problems?

Like any software or program everything has good and bad. I have used Wix for my company website for 3 years and I have never had any problem yet. But that doesn't mean these isn't problems. I have used FaceBook for years I manage 3 company fan pages and somehow Facebook just blew away 5,000 fans and now I have none for a nonprofit I run. We have a big event coming up and no way to communicate with our fans. I have been trying to contact Facebook for over two months and I still have no answer or solution to the problem. Get over it people. If it doesn't work for you try another option. If you are using the free version stop complaining it is FREE! Even the paid version is much cheaper that paying an IT person so deal with the issues if you want to save the cash. I like wix and will continue to use them.

Wix has it good points and bad points. It's easy to use and gives users more flexibility and control over their site layout compared to some other web hosts. Response times for tech help are usually pretty fast, but sometimes not very helpful. Uploading can be a real problem sometimes. If you try to upload anything late at night it seems to be quick and easy, but if you try and do it at other times, it's a real battle and can take forever. There are also accessibility issues because it requires end users to have the latest version of flash which means a lot of people won't be able to see your site and most of them will just think the site is down all the time. Wix isn't perfect and I really wish they would fix some of their kinks, but overall I like the service and plan on keeping my site with them.

If you are looking for an alternative to Wix, I can really recommend the www.cabanova.com website builder. It also uses Flash, so the drag-n-drop interface is very slick and easy to use. And you can also make a version of your website optimized for smartphones (in XHTML). Cabanova is also free, and you can upgrade to paid plans with more pages, web space etc, or purchase a custom domain. There are lots of templates (including text, images and a contact form) to choose from, or you can create your own template completely from scratch.

I've seen on this blog a complaint about logging into Wix . Recently I had a problem logging into my Wix account to make an edit on one of our sites. This was the first time in 6-months of working with free and paid Wix sites that I had a problem logging in. I did a quick search in Wix's help and learned that I had to clear my computer's browser cache of cookies(this machine uses Windows Explorer). After that I was logging in to Wix without any problems, usual. I have not had any issues with logging in on my other computer with Firefox. There is quite an extensive amount of help information available from Wix without even sending in a e-mail for tech support. Do a simple search, and you find an answer. Again, with Wix, there is no need to RTFM. To the comment from Drew Berry, Wix has posted that they are working on making Wix sites available to smart phones. Adobe Flash is used extensively, even a commercial Meraki Wifi system we use, uses Flash for it's login splash page. Some of our clients had to have flash installed to access our wireless network.

Don't get it if you want a professional website that loads quickly. Also, your mobile phone users are going to hate it....if they can get it. It requires adobe flash and iphone users cannot access it. THAT is a real problem. I wish I had stayed with godaddy.

Another update... After a few weeks I decided to opt to downgrade my package from the unlimited to combo as I didn't see a significant loading speed difference. I was a bit confused on that process... I e-mailed for billing support at 7;35pm a Sunday night, I had a response in my mailbox at 12:39am Monday morning - a 5-hour response... seems pretty fast to me? I had to "unassign" the package from my site, then upgrade back to the lesser package. I did have to back into settings and repoint WITHIN Wix to our domain, and reset the Google Analytics number. I have a refund coming to my credit card, and a one month charge to activate the lesser package. All is well now, I'm downgraded, everything is good to go.. Oh ya... and with the downgraded package, we are paying $99 a year.. NEXT, I would also like to speed loading, so I looked at three 100x294 pixels images in a slide show gallery I have at the top of the site, all the pages are 1/2 pages or mini pages below this gallery. I checked my file size and those three images were all around 750kb each. I reduced their resolution with Pixlr to about 50kb each and uploaded teh replacement images, and that made a huge difference in loading with no real impact to the quality of the image on the monitor. I need to go through all my images on the site and do the same reduction as that's the trick, and this is probably more important then with a HTML page. This resolution reduction is promised by Wix to be built into the editor down the road.. for now I'll use Pixlr... also free.

so Andyswebtools.com $29 a month/$349 year for noncommercial account.. www.yoursite.com is $20 month, www.yourwebdepartment.com is $41 ... or Wix.. commercial unlimited account, $148 year or $195 year for most expensive ecommerce package.... plus you can stay free as long as you like, but with Wix ads.. hmmm... $349 for Andy's sounds like a deal...

I ran across a competitor to Wix that is everything Wix isn't. Andyswebtools.com They aren't Flash focused and real sophisticated but they offer a lot of useful features and their customer support is the best. If you don't want to learn HTML they are the way to go. Your can try it for free for two weeks. After that it's $29 a month for the non-eCommerce version but they don't limit pages or Email like goDaddy or the others.

Wix has it noted that image file sizes & number of animations impacts loading. They recommend to distribute images across multiple pages. Wix has in the works image file size/resolution reduction will be eventually incorporated into the Wix editor. Right now it's best to reduce images before uploading to speed loading. Size of images impacting loading effects HTML pages too.. but obviously more so with flash pages. There is also a note that Wix is working on making Wix pages available to smart phones.. looks progressive to me.

I only have a free wix account and I am pleased with it. Sometimes it acts up while in edit mode but I can either close that window and re-open it or when in doubt, Ctrl Z to undo. As far as being slow, it all depends on your RAM and processing power of your computer. On the site it does mention wix is not the best for MAC. After reading all of these reviews I am skeptical of purchasing a plan. You would think that the free version would have the issues and the paid plans would not. My mother in law just switched to a paid plan, so we'll see what happens.

From my previous posting, we went ahead with Wix for our commercial website a couple weeks ago. I used the prepaid credit card, that worked. I did learn that I had to register it with a site from the supplying bank, for it to be accepted by Wix. The bank has a noted with the card that many websites must have a registered card before they'd accept them. That took a couple minutes, and back to Wix, the prepaid card was accepted, all is good. We did the dreaded upgrade from free to the paid site, now with our domain and it went totally smoothly. Wix came online with our domain about a hour after I made the changes with our domain registrar. Everything seems fine, the website look amazing, and I'm no programmer. We started with combo package, and went premium to try it, mostly for the bandwidth. I'm not sure if that will be worth it, as the pages so far seems to load at the same speed. I will probably go back to the lesser package, but I have two weeks to decide before the new package sticks. Wix does let you change from package to package, up and down, and totally free again if I want. Google Analytics is providing the stats on our traffic.. Wix already provides a place in the site settings for the Google Analytics ID number, ready to go, no pasting HTML as normally required by Google Analytics. The Wix billing has no issues, everything seems easy to find, even invoices to use for the business expenses.. I have no idea why people are having issues with logging in..??? see Mr WIXsucks posting, just above.. I have a unsearchable Wix free site for news and information that I use in conjunction with a WIFI network at a hotel, I update it everyday, sometimes several times a day, and no issues with loggin in ever... Interesting note... Wix hosting even turned out to be cheaper then the hosting company we had been using with our old HTML site... plus the bonus of the excellent & free website editor. Another bonus with Wix is I update our sites from the office, from home, I could do it from any computer in the world without any special software installed.. If I get an idea for the site, I add it no matter where I am. I wonder if all of these "sucks" posters are simply inept users or from Wix's competition, using the anonymity of the internet to attack a company providing a (so far) decent product ..? I'll see how it goes and post again in a month or two.

I've been a graphic artist since 1975 so I understand my way around most applications and file formats. I can't speak for the billing department at WIX because I haven't had any bad experiences but as far as the application goes, once I played around with the program and got through a quirk here or there, it's been smooth sailing and have not experience any problems.

I have 2 premium websites on Wix, and I believe Wix did a great job on customers support unlike what Mr Peepee said. I encountered several issues when setting up my second website, as a non-tech person, I have no idea how to muck with those CNAME and subdomain thingy. I sent an Email to Wix to file a support ticket, within 24 hours I received a response from them. They mark my case as Urgent, and provide me with as much info as I needed. They even sent me twice follow up Emails to see if I'm still experiencing issues. Wix is definitely the way to go!

Sigh....such ignorance and negativity. This my 3rd Wix review because I feel the need to drop in a bit of positiveness amongst the hate. To those honestly wondering if Wix is any good, just try it. It doesn't hurt. Take the time to experience setting up your site, then let it live for a little while. Visit it frequently but sporadically to see how well and how fast it loads each time. Play around with the pages and uploads. In other words, EVALUATE it. Don't just listen to people who scream that they had a bad experience (that more than likely they themselves are the root of), then get scared and say Wix isn't for you. No, it wasn't for them! YOU still haven't tried it. One guy above stated that he'd set up payment with a pre-paid card. How wonderful that, instead of being pushed away by POSSIBLE billing nightmares he instead sought a solution to a problem that he may not even have, and will still give Wix a try. Kudos to you, Eric! Basically, if you want an honest review of Wix, you'll just have to try it for yourself. You know your needs best, you know your limits of patience, and you know your capacity to learn and do. So take these 3 things and give Wix a try. After all, if it were that bad, then they wouldn't still be here. oh the internet.. I see a bunch of professional programmers (or wanna be's) complaining that they are upset on how they aren't always needed to build a decent site, so they need to justify their existence by attacking competition, see Mighty Pepe. Plus, the comment, "complete pile of crap that sucks the sweat out of dead man's balls", very professional talk Mr Pepe, you made yourself and your comments ever so credible. Next there are those who want everything for nothing or want a way of scamming for something extra for free, see Rohit Agarwal and his "To remove the ads we need to burn a hole of $120 / year in our pockets". Then there are the complaints about trying to contact Wix for help to use the editor, that isn't much harder then using MS-Word.. no need to RTFM, just figure it out patiently or use the forum, I am sure glad I'm not on Wix customer service line, considering what kind of stupid questions they must get from users who should trying mastering the art of making toast, instead of a website. "sir, you need to turn on your computer first.. then click Internet Explorer.. oh, that's the big blue e on your desktop.. sir, that's your computer's desktop, not where you have your pencil sharpener" .. Stop being stupid, and first try to figure out how to stop burning your toast and avoid building websites if it's beyond you. ..awh, the internet, where one can slag anyone with no worry of being accountable for your actions or credibility.. on-line product and service eviews are actually getting worse and worse as true reviews are clouded by reviews by angry types with axes to grind. Wix is easy, if you don't like ads, go for the minimum $ to remove the ads.. I do believe Wix is a business, and the incentive for you is to pay to loose the ads.. it's kind of like having banner advertising in your "free" e-mail... free isn't always free, the company offering the free service within a limit, beyond that they need to collect cash one way or another.. If Wix is so bad, then go back 10-years or how about 20-years, write your website entirely in code, and enjoy your day.. remember, at least once a day, you should up those stairs, past your mother's room, you will find the back door of your house and there is a thing called the sun above you.. try going for a walk in that sun light, before returning to your parent's basement to start again banging on your keyboard into the late night hours... Try Wix out for free for a while, pay if you don't like the ads, or go make toast....

Wix is a complete pile of crap that sucks the sweat out of dead man's balls. All these "non-tech" regular folks get all excited about the fact they can "make" their own site with Flash when Flash is on its way out. It does not work in the bigger mobile platforms, has an atrocious speed, has horrible SEO results, has NO customer service, provides EXTREMELY limited design options, it is very unstable, it is one massive upsale scam, and what is worst, MAKES EVERY SITE LOOK THE SAME. I have seen with my own eyes FIVE photographers send their portfolios over with the same EXACT layout. In a world where attention spans are getting shorter and where potential clients see 10, 20, 30 websites a day, having a site that looks exactly the same as the other guy makes you risk loosing your shot at a job. I would recommend: A) Find a design you like. Or make it yourself in photoshop. That will cut down on the amount of work you need pay a professional to do it. There are literary thousand of sites with free graphics, layout, inspiration-type links, etc. Then LISTEN to what a professional tells you, but MAKE SURE they are professionals, not some "designer" that uses Dreamweaver. Do your homework. If they guy is good and reputable, he will have good references. And set a budget: You have $500? Then go to a pro and ask him/her what they can set you up with for that cash. It is not like the old days where developers needed to code by hand: he can set you up with a Wordpress or a Drupal-hosted solution for cheaper. Also, as far as hosting, SIMPLY buy the domain, DO NOT buy hosting before you have locked out with a developer because thanks to all the new cloud hosting most developers can set you up with a node in their cloud for a fraction of the money and at least you know that if you do expand, the cloud will be able to expand with you. Share hosting and even VPS hosting is out, but cloud hosting is FAR too technical for a regular user. Developers usually have large cloud accounts and setting you with a small node is snap for most of them, specially if you have only a few visitors. Do NOT use Flash. I had Flash for years and it is great, but Flash is on its way out. 100%, no question. Most novice people go nuts with it, adding all sorts of bells and whistles without realizing how annoying their sites are. (The MySpace Syndrome) You CANNOT use Google Analytics with Flash, you CANNOT deep link with Flash, you CANNOT use the back buttons or browser history. In the last Flash site we had we learned the hard way all the "workarounds" you had to implement just to make a Flash site act like any other site. Look for any Wordpress or Drupal based solution. There are many companies implementing the same concept as Wix.com using HTML5 that ARE compatible with mobile platforms, that are 100% SEO compatible, that come integrated with Google Analytics, that have TRUE CMS controls, that have all the basic things that most Flash sites lack.

After building a decent free site with Wix, it looks like we are going to start paying for the Combo package by the end of January.... use our own domain, we don't need eCommerce or large storage or bandwidth of the Unlimited package. As far as Wix taking too much money from a credit card, we are going to use a prepaid credit card so if we decide to stop using the Wix service, Wix can only run out of money on the prepaid card, the card will simply stop paying. I figure I will load the card with enough money to cover one year, and wait and see how things go. I plan on leaving our existing site on our current hosting company, and if Wix doesn't work out, I'll switch back.. minimum risk. What I can say is the Wix editor is stupidly easy. The end result looks very professional with no crazy programming. The Widget feature works, but needs more refining, but Wix does say it's only a Beta package. There have been some recent upgrades, and as long as they keep upgrading, I think we can make this work long-term. On one "complaints" site, I read hundreds of complaints about eBay and PayPal, yet I have been using both services with few issues. Take what you read on the internet with an absolute grain of salt, complaints seem to be much more common on the internet, then positive reviews.. it's easy to complain.

This is an update to a comment I left in 2009. My original comment was that Wix was awesome. It's 2011, and my opinion stands. I have two websites through Wix: www.SoulArtPhoto.com www.Eternity-Philops.com Both are custom made, meaning without a template. While it's certainly good to start with a template for beginners, once you get the hang of it you'll have no problem starting from a blank page. I've since upgraded both of my sites to premium. This was mainly to get rid of the Wix advertisements. They are small, yes, but I wanted to look as professional possible, and little ads take away from that. Nothing bad on the part of Wix, just a personal choice. As for billing, I've not had any problems yet. Basically you sign up, then once a year they'll bill your credit card on that date, from what I understand. Somehow I accidentally got my photography web site to be billed every 2 years....not really sure how, but it works in my favor, so again no complaints. For new account upgrades I think you might get some free Facebook and Google advertising, but I don't know how that works. Evidently I don't qualify for these free perks since I'm not a new account holder, yet I keep getting messages saying that I do....so far this is my ONLY Wix complaint (saying I'm going to get free stuff when I'm not) and it's a very minor one. I don't know where all the negative comments are coming from, but my personal experience has been nothing but good so far. Take a look at my sites and judge for yourself. Again, I built them both on my own, so if I can do it, you can do it.

Thank God I read this page + all the 48 + complaints on complaintsboard(dot)com about the wix scam. Seems like wix billing is screwing tons of ppl, and the so-called "Customer support" is non-existent. Notice wix how I spell "Customer" - with a capital C. Obviously you all do not spell it that way. Still looking for a good and honest EZ site builder. CYA wix, ur not getting a cent on this Customer's money!!!!

OK.....mixed reviews, from very, very bad to excellent. The other option is a stand alone web design package on your own computer, design the site, then upload to another hosting company? Is there any web design packages out there that are as easy to use as Wix, no programming, and will create a similar professional look without a long learning curve? Years ago, I'd a couple sites with Frontpage, but have forgotten quite a bit over the years from not not using it, Wix was amazingly easy with an minimal learning curve. Is there software out there that is reasonably priced and as easy as Wix's editor? I hate to buy software to find it difficult to use, or limited.

I built my website using Wix and I'm happy with the layout, graphics and flash. I think it looks professional and it's easy to manage, but I have one LARGE problem and that is I now can't receive emails to my existing email accounts and had to get new business cards printed with my personal email instead of work email. They tried to help me via email support and I followed the steps but when it was quite apparent that there was no solution, they gave up. I kept sending emails to try and get the problem resolved but now they don't even get back to me. I paid for a premium subscrition and don't get any technical support so it's a little disappointing. I'm thinking about using something else, but since work has picked up, I just don't have the time. If anyone else has had problems getting existing emails to work on your new Wix site and has managed to fix the issue... PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW TO DO IT!!! I've listened & had a real good look at Wix. In my professional opinion this has all the hallmarks of a start-up involving a bunch of try-hard entrepreneurs with a great concept but no follow-through. I'd go so far as to say there is a substantial amount of in-bickering amongst them resulting in operational paralysis; seems like their investors are putting the bite on also. Moreover, its crystal clear to me that at this rate of knots and with so much collateral damage done already these guys are going to look to cash-out with a quick exit strategy, rather than follow through and sweat it out with an honorable liquidity strategy... seen that before

hm, did I read that correctly? 4 million customers & 150 employees? If only 10% of your customers pose a single question per year, that'd be 1100 questions per day. Not all of the 150 employees are customers support of course. Wix looks promising though. Sites I have checked are indeed slow. And of course no iPhone support. Poor SEO. I might give it a try to some non-essential sites, or at the very least keep my eye on it. Hope it will develop further into a service that covers more needs that are essential for todays use. Oh, and for people with billing problems - do chargebacks. And for people building sites - write your content in a basic word processor, save, then copy/paste. Keep all the content saved, just in case.

It is a no brainer alright... DONT use Wix. Any company that causes customers to empty their back account in order to stop their fraudulent charges has NO FUTURE beacuse their past is catching up with them. R.I.P Wix. Great idea, no ability to implement them. You can use Yola, Zoovy, Weebly, Moonfruit, Sprout, ZenCart.... ANYTHING but Wix!! You're warned!

Was sold on Wix BEFORE I read this page. Interesting, with so many website builders out there I'll be exploring a little more. Disappointed with the Wix feedback although it confirms many of my concerns. I'm still undecided ... I have the luxury of time as I already have a site out there so shopping around now seems logical.

Folks like anything else you have to study Wix to be good at it. The Wixpedia answers pretty much everything. I don't work for WIx, I work for Microsoft and I can tell you with over 25 years of experience and having mastered web building the old school way, there is no one out there that compares to Wix. Funny whenever we have technical support emails and calls, 90% of the time the problems are caused by end users not having read instructions. I agree that Wix is not as easy as some folks thought it should be, nevertheless if you study Wix you can master it. Definitely worth the money. I have completed 5 web sites in a week and billed $1000 to each client. Web updates are a joke and I am getting 30 per hour to sit at home and work on these businesses. This is a no brainer.

Wix Stooges
on 08 Oct 2010 at 01:33
Also note that most of the positive 'reviews' of Wix appear to be coming from Wix stooges themselves. Such things follow a particular pattern. A bad experience review, followed by 4 or 5 great reviews, in the hope of drowning out the negative... but having seen these things over the years, it's an obvious pattern. Coupled with the responses from the Wix employee about Etia, or whatever, it's enough to put you off their service altogether. In short - AVOID! (Queue some positive reviews now, all spaced out withing a few days of one another - Over to you Wix!)

Not good for selling products. it seems to work at first but after you publish it covers your products with a watermark so that you cant access it. the site isnt as organized as it could be. other than that, its pretty good for beginners who arent accustomed to html or if you just want a quick website without the extra work.

WIX SUCKS. I BUILT A SITE. PAID FOR PREMIUM - THEY BILLED SOMEONE ELSE. WHEN I CALLED THEM ON THIS - THEY CREDITED ME INSTEAD OF THE OTHER COMPANY. SO BACK AND FORTH FOR ONE MONTH - SUCH A SIMPLE SOLUTION. MANY EMAILS LATER ONLY TO GET A STANDARD REPLY... AND NEITHER OF US HAVE A SITE. WE HAVE LOST BUSINESS DUE TO WIX NEGLIGENCE AND STUPIDITY. THEY STILL HAVE NOT CREDITED ME OR THE OTHER COMPANY FOR PREMIUM SITES WE PAID FOR IN FULL. WIX IS A BUNCH OF OUT RIGHT CROOKS. I WOULD STAY CLEAR OF THESE BOOBS. THERE IS NO SUPORT WHATSOEVER. THEIR BILLING IS A DISASTER.. AND THEIR SITE HAS FAR TOO MANY KINKS TO WASTE TIME WITHOUT CLEAR AND CONCISE INFORMATION. WIX SUCKS.

I'm seeing more and more people trying http://www.yourwebdepartment.com Certainly less flashy (no pun intended) than Wix but gets the job done. And I heard they're getting a new version out soon, probably worth a try especially if you're a designer. Not based on templates though, so you may be a little intimidated in the beginning. Or not, I've seen lots of small business sites done with it and people seem to be genuinely happy. I think they're from Canada.

I have been building my website on WIX, and I have a few things to say regarding much that has already been said. As for customer service, I am not yet a paying member, but I must say that every time I have emailed a question, I have gotten a fast and helpful response. In truth, I have been pleasantly surprised by the responses. I know nothing about designing a website, and I am very happy with how easy it is to do. I am not using a template, but doing so from scratch, and it is still very user friendly. Nevertheless, the one thing I am finding is an almost deal breaking frustration with slowness and unresponsiveness to commands as I am trying to build the site. Sometimes, I want to cry with the slowness. I hsve thought that this was merely the fact that I am not paying and still in the building process, but this blog is telling me otherwise, and I must say, it is making me think twice.

Wow, I definitely got an ear full! WIX really has the best builder I have seen and flash websites in general tend to be quite slow. And it really is a worst fate to hire a designer to build you the same website for well over $3000.00 and find out that you have to pay him every time the said website has to be updated. Add great Customer Service and follow through to that mix and this company is going where few other companies have gone before :). That being said, please note that the Customer Service Representative needs to go for a little refresher training. I have been a CSR myself for over ten years and my boss would have given one of the lowest appraisals if a conversation like that was ever documented on my behalf. Understand Etai, that you may not have been incorrect, but your delivery needs some work, your response to the customer implied tone. I can appreciate that you must have put a good amount of effort into trying to resolve the customer's issue, having been provided with very little or seemingly no useable information, but a CSR should never give personal advice in the middle of professional correspondence, not unless the client has implied a friendly stance and some Customer Care departments will still penalize you for non-professional conduct as you are representing the company. In future, zero in on the issue, screen out the excess and give a non-engaging response to the already irate customer. Have a great day, keep up the good work and fix the bugs!

I'm a IT consultant and these comments are too funny. Having over 20+ years in IT consulting, web design, and marketing, It is obvious all the one complaining have had little to no experience with other web designers/hosting companies. Let me give all you guys complaining about customer service some free advice. Given the low monthly charge most charge for hosting, most of the time the customer/tech service suck. I almost never get a tech on the phone that actually know what he is talking about at any of these companies. I have had problems with slow load times, bad customers service, wrong billing, sites down, sites missing, and the list goes on and on. I use GoDaddy and several other reseller hosting site as well as hosting my own for my primary customers. For the money, WIX is the best deal going. If you actually take the time to learn to use it correctly, it is a very effective web site builder. Yes it's slow some time and crashes BUT I also have other sites and hosting services with the same problem. If you think WIX is the only company with problems and bad customer service, you haven't tried many others. I have had several sites up for over a year on WIX with no problems. If you cannot live with sometimes having a slow flash site, go pay a pro $5000+ to build it. Then add a premium hosting company with a guaranteed SLA and speed to boot for an additional $40+ a month and then stop complaining. Don't forget bout the $95 an hour to have changes and updates made to it. Happy Hosting!!!!!

Hey All, It seems more of usage problems and expecting everything for free! Even with a free account, if you expect to see SLAs for support, come on! And one another thing, is this wixpremium.info legal? It should not be that I use the service and end up bombing my entire site, just like that! I feel if you are into serious online business, flash sites might not be the way to go; but if its to showcase a hobby or some interest, definitely cool... Apple has also stopped supporting any Flash on iphone. Thanks.
Wix - Great and Bad
on 06 Aug 2010 at 11:47
i agree re the customer service issues. Wix has a great website builder - the best i have used. The biggest drawbacks however are 1. Flash means no ipad no iphones able to view our website. 2. very slow load times - against SEO in the sense that many people will click off the page due to the load times - not blaming wix and its really just Flash.

I like Wix too but customer service very bad. If I pay that much money I like to talk to some one on the phone and would not want any one sending snotty emails. I have to say there customer service is out of order. They need to do something and talk to those customers who are upset with there services. I think its Win Win for Wix if they do that.

All the programmers posting negative feeds are just lame. They don't want to lose their rip off contracts worth thousands of dollars. I am a designer and have done web sites with dream weaver. That is too damn time consuming. WIX is an amaizing tool and the people who came up with it should be thanked for freeing the public from the crappy world of hard code, waste of time HTML. For some reason if you are a programmer there is this thought in the back of your mind that if you don't code it, it is not good. I could care less about that since I know HTML. With WIX I can design a really nice web site with very original content and publish right away. No more crappy FTPing all the bloody files. Time is money and designing with WIX makes money. Who cares if you have to pay 120 dollars a year when you get a top of the line professional site and can charge a client 700 dollars? You will make more sites and get more clients. The only thing WIX needs to do is add email. This move will allow them to own the zone and quiet the programmers who want to own the maket and continue to rip people off. $4000 for a "professionally built site" Give me a break, that is the rent and cost of equipment for a couple of months for a small business owner! WIX keep up the great work. Your service is by far the best out there.

Hi Just saw the complains about Wix reading all this I have to say not all of them is a user error and most importantly the customer service ofcourse is not an user error at all. Still deducting money even if the account has been canceled and Customer has to cancel his bank account because of Wix its not a user error! Seems that you are from Wix! I sent a request based on finding out you cannot upload any photos on a Mac - so you build a site and then find you cannot put your own photos up. Got a ridiculous unhelpful response about Snow Leopard and flash. I am not using snow leopard, and looking around on the net it's a common problem. I have to borrow a mates PC to get photos up -then it works fine. I have 5 different Macs, running different configs and browsers. Exactly the same problem. None work. Wix could be good, but they have some serious bugs and I don't think they are able to cope with bug fixes. They sound seriously understaffed and like one of those startups who are doing well on an originally good idea, but are just not able to work responsively and listen to their customers. They're probably waiting to be bought by Google ;) I would not be surprised if they have a handful of underpaid nerds with share options trying to cope with a programme so full of holes it would be best used as a spaghetti strainer. I am currently asking a designer to copy the site I built (which I like) and get me off. Shame because if it was better, people like me who have no time to learn Go Live or Dreamweaver, would be happy. If I ran my business like they do their customer facing end, I doubt I would survive. When all is said and done it is a great idea, the company just looks like it is not being run properly.

Etai Do not lie. I received first reply form WIX in little writing saying send us the details and below that in big letter try to sell me the product and that really upset me. That was the reason I could not see the first line and then I sent another note saying you "instead of helping me you are selling me the product." Then Etai your reply to me was very very rude. Which I mentioned in my note "that you made me cry and I will try to be civilised otherwise there will be no difference between you and me." Etai again in your above note to me you are saying "Being rude after all of the customer service we had provided you etc.." Customer have right to get upset and since you have started this believe me you will pay heavy price for this. Its not only me who is complaning there are others as well. Begging others not to join WIX. Reply from you like this make much more clear for sensible people what type of staff WIX have may be its just one member of staff have attitude problem which spoils the company name.

To Anonymous above- that was me, and I apologize if you took it the wrong way. However, after several days where we ask you for more information, and instead of sending us more information you simply sent us: "Your reply to is based on marketing and asking me to upgrade instead solving my problem. This is outrageous" - when we clearly asked you for more information in order to assist you. You sent us "On your website forum and on your email you said save as back up I agree but I don't accept that if you just simply save it should have been saved. In my other website with other company I saved and no back up is there" Well, if you agree, then why not create a backup? I tried to explain to you that when you save in Wix, you are actually overwriting the old copy- just like if you were to save an image you had edited in photoshop. Once you try to open that .psd file again, it's too late to revert back and try to edit an older version. I then still asked you for more information: "Please provide us with the exact steps that you took before this happened- as much as you can remember. For EXAMPLE: 1) place gallery 2) add 4 photos 3) go to mini page 5 4) add comments box 5) enable the comments box 6) Save 3x 7) switch back to gallery page 8) switch back to comments page. Everything is erased I am not guaranteeing that we can retrieve your content, if it was indeed erased by a bug- but we need more information in order to investigate this." To which you had replied stating several steps, then confirmed that at this point your site was still fine, when "Came out from the preview and I was looking to my LOGO and thinking all sorts of ideas. All of a sudden Navigator bar went blank. I didn't touch anything and waited. After couple of minutes I clicked the save button to see where every thing is gone." Even if a bug had erased everything, once you had saved it, you overwrite the previous file. I had even emailed you back and forth a few more times, apologizing for this and explaining that if you had saved, we cannot do anything to assist you- and gave you advice on how to create a backup in the future and avoid this situation. Still, the response you gave was: "Hi First I saved every thing and then I was looking to LOGO and thinking and i saw Navigator bar disappeared. Since I was on comments page so I was not sure what's happening and that was the reason don't want to touch any thing. At the same time I was little relaxed thinking I have saved every thing. After couple of minutes Still Nav bar was blank so then I clicked the save button and still couldn't see Nav bar and then looked at the right side no pages only two pages I can see." "Still no help yet" "Dont worry we have been investigating and find out that people have lost their account even Premium customer website lost the their page and Wix didn't do any thing. Little business were involved in it. Now we know who runs the company how this is all started and soon this will be on Media. No tel no on website or talk to human No company address Who owns and runs the company etc Then being rude with customers and indirectly blaming them . Wix is covering themselves all the time saying that save back up but you also know that this answer is not enough. Doesn't matter everything will be on air very soon. Shahnaz" " To which I had sent you the following: "Hey Shahnaz, We don't have anything to hide. Wix maintains offices in New York, Paris and Tel Aviv. We have approximately 150 employees and over 4 million users! All of our employees are on-site and working hard to provide you with the best product possible! Below I have included our Wix office mailing address: Wix.com 10 W. 18th St, 6th Floor New York, NY, 10011 You can review some articles about us by searching for Wix in Google or on techcrunch. I am trying to assist you in this matter, and apologized if it had seemed that I was rude. I cannot offer you any more assistance in this matter than I already have. If you require assistance in other matters, don't hesitate to contact us. Have a great weekend, Etai & The Wix Team" After this point, all you had done is continue to be rude, while refuse to accept the fact that we had provided you with the best customer service possible. If you ask someone for a favor and they try, but are unable to do you the favor- it does not mean they did not try. If you ask us to fix your issue (deleted website) and we are unable to fix it, it does not mean that we did not provide you with 'customer service'. It simply means that we are not able to because what you had asked for is impossible. Shahnaz, I wish we could have retrieved the site- and we have no reason not to if we could- but it was simply not possible in your case. There is nothing we can do if you had already saved. Being constantly rude after all of the customer service we had provided you will not make the impossible suddenly possible, and blaming us for it, after you had clearly stated that you 'saved' after the error- won't help us retrieve it. Granted, you did not know that the copy gets overwritten- but that's why we tried to assist you with a solution for the future, and apologized for it.

Wow that was a really snotty response. That has happened to me, especially if I was backspacing or deleting text. Everything would disappear. My suggestion - go to Edit and click UNDO or hit the UNDO button on the upper right and it will undo the last thing you did when the error happened. That was supposed to be the point of their response to you (exactly what were you doing before everything went to pot - but instead you got a sarcastic nasty answer)...well that's good enough for me because it is a little tricky to work with - one example When I click on a product, that product doesn't load, the first product in the queue does. I also was having trouble keeping track of the products I was loading. After finally decided to give up and deciding this will not be a good site for ecommerce (although I like how the cart is available and easy for set up. I'm now trying one called Zoovy, which I think in the end will be more amendable to an ecommerce site.

I built my free website with WIX and was doing nothing and just looking to my screen and thinking about LOGO and all the pages disappered all of a sudden. As you mentioned they are rude yes exactly this was happened with me they were rude and they said they cannot do anything about it because I saved my site after couple of minutes. Read the reply below from Wix staff speciall the last two paras. If any one is still would like to stay with wix I can only say that Just wait until your website vanished. Etai Staff: Obi-Wix Kenobi Join Date: Feb 2010 Considering the information you provided, which was: Title: "my all pages disappeared (162984)" Body: "I was working on comments page and all of a sudden all the pages disappered. All my work gone. What shall I do. Please help" Which didn't include so much information and definitely didn't answer Paola's question about the steps you had taken beforehand- the 'exact' scenario. Furthermore, the only response you gave to the question posed was: "On 25th Friday when I was on Comments page all of a sudden I was looking at the screen and every thing disappeared. " Really? So you were looking at the page, it was all there, and then right in front of your eyes- POOF! It vanished? I find that hard to believe. There must have been something in the middle- the system, as well as your PC, does not have a mind of it's own- unless of course, your PC has a virus. I'm not here to try and create some drama. But you need to understand that we can only work with the information you provide, and we will do our best to assist you. What will help your cause, is trying to be PROACTIVE, and helping us help you. Forget what happened before, since that won't help anyone. Try and figure out where we move from here- now that, would be a useful approach. My personal suggestion (not as an employee of Wix, but as a fellow human being in the ever evolving world we live in): Read 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People', by Stephen Covey. Please don't take any of this in a negative manner, as it is not intended this way. The point of this is to help you understand that we ARE here to assist you, but you just didn't make it possible. -Etai Obi-Wix Kenobi

would like to add my penny's worth...wix is a great web site : free is good, and upgrade is not rip off! plenty of templates and really good ones. i used wysiwyg5 web builder www.poshposhspecs.com took me over two months and having to download loads of different flash menus etc abd learn how to edit them. big plus with wix, you can develop a site from any computer once registered. and keep it updated and edited from any where in the world. it's abloody great prog' keep up the good work WIX and get any teething problems sorted. I am a small business owner and I think Wix has been a great alternative to paying someone thousands of dollars for a website. In only a couple of days I made a site that was exactly what I needed, and that has blown everyone away who has seen it. It seems to me that most of the complaints here are about small things, and that they are letting the details ruin how truly powerful and useful wix is. I don't usually recommend things or write reviews, but I feel Wix has done me such a service that I owe it to them to actually try to get some truth across. If you are unsure about it, give it a couple of hours and you probably will be pretty happy in the end. I know I was.

So with all the great stories and not so great stories...What is the recommendation for a small business owner..Should I depend on WIX to help me market my products online ? or do I rather invest in someone like godaddy ($50/month)to get the reliability, availability and customer support one would want..? Any thoughts..

Well you guys, Wix might be a cool solution to people who have absolutely no idea how to build websites or anything. But if you want to be taken seriously dont make a website with Wix. A Myspace page is also very easy to create and has multiple cool features and a very nice UI to edit. But, did you ever see a company that used Myspace for their "professional" website. No. This is something you could use for fun purpose and for a little project or something. But it's definately not a solution to any company website that wants to be taken seriously. If someone with web-experience comes on to your website they will leave immediately. Oh and what about the 20% of the people who don't have flash installed or can not install it because of lack of acces? like in many businesses. Wix - No go for me.

DO NOT USE WIX IF YOU EXPECT ANY KIND OF CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! ROSS, WHO I HAVE SPOKE TO 3 TIMES IS EXTREMELY RUDE. AND NOW THAT WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET THE SAME PROBLEM FIXED FOR OVER A MONTH NOW WILL NOT CALL US BACK AND THE PROBLEM THAT IS NOT OUR FAULT BUT A PROBLEM ON THEIR END IS STILL NOT WORKING AND COSTING US BUSINESS AT EVERY TURN. THEY HAVE AN OK PRODUCT BUT THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. WE WILL BE SHUTTING THEM DOWN AND NOW SPENDING MORE MONEY AND TIME TO CREATE ANOTHER SITE ELSE WHERE. THIS WAS SUCH A WASTE OF TIME FOR US!!!! I AM BEYOND DISAPPOINTED, AND SHOULD HAVE JUST STAYED WITH YAHOO.

The fact that there ISN'T COSTUMER service for something you're billed monthly for is INSANE! I changed my credit card info and the site just wasn't reading it correctly, I got the same nonsense e-mail from them over and over again, could not find a number to call to just TALK to someone, they ended up sending my bill to a collections agency! A $10 BILL I WAS TRYING DESPERATELY TO PAY! It's awful business practice on their part. But, even worse is how SLOW Wix is. I'm trying to run a professional site and it takes 4 minutes to LOAD the silly thing. I've been severely disapointed with wix, but haven't found a better alternative yet. *sigh*

yes.. I agree.. If you pay for their Premium service you should get better customer service.. !!!! Hey dude.. many sites offer great products, AND customer service, and still you do not "have to pay thousands for a professional" as you say.. wake up! How can they promise you get better customer service with a paid membership to only not return e-mails and direct you to a FORUM? Really ...??? this is premium cust service? I pass, as do many of my friends. You can have a great product but without follow through and customer service you will not make it in the market place.

^oh yeah, I also forgot to add: I recommend art students AND artists in general to use DAportfolio.com instead of Wix.com
Anonymous
on 08 Mar 2010 at 10:30
If you're an art student and looking for a place to host your portfolio online with the added pizzaz for free, Wix is NOT the place to go. It seems all need and flashy (pun intended) at first, but as I delved deeper in to Wix, I found out that people's websites load very slowly, are prone to lagging, and content disappearance if not refreshed multiple times or if one doesn't have fast internet connection and fast browser. I have a fast internet connection, yet it takes a while for a lot of the content to load. This is especially true if the website is loaded with tons of flash objects. The more flash there is, the more slow the website will be. Because of this, I recommend just using DeviantART's portfolio hosting website, DAportfolio.com. They offer flash and non-flash portfolio hosting, and it looks as professional as Wix. It's also a lot cleaner and smoother than wix in terms of loading times, "clutter crash", and banners/advertisement placement. Artists can choose the free .daportfolio.com account or get their own domain name.

I was young and naive when i signed up for a year membership with Wix. Wix is one dimensional, yes it looks flashy & eye popping however, on the back end, the sites are slow, take forever to load & must be refreshed multiple times in order to see the sites content. I do not recommend Wix if you want to portray yourself as a professional, although this could be a neat tool for a class project.

I am an experienced designer/developer/+. I have played with Wix extensively for some months now and monitored the Wix forums attentively. An unbiased, accurate RATING on this service would be as follows: WIX CONCEPT 8/10 (great concept & editor when it works, potential to be outstanding, lacks hosting independence, asset security and auto-backup facility, -2 points) WIX DESIGN 7/10 (very easy to use, flexible, low learning curve, requires little or no web skills but the lacking of HTML insertion and PAGE URLs gets -2; Wix dogged persistence on unsightly Wix advertising even on paid plans -1; make your advertising presence subtle guys! people will still see you and recognize that you are the provider but ugly in your face advertising may easily make your brand visible but remember every customer that sees you this way will also know that that is how THEIR creations will be experienced when they use your service - that's self defeating awareness!) WIX DELIVERY 3/10 (wonderful when it works but all in all, very unstable, INCONSISTENT - MEDIUM, SLOW & VERY SLOW page delivery speeds - back-end needs far more resources to centrally host this service & size of client base; updates released without sufficient testing - same repeated errors appear with every new update, minor or major; no apparent QA performed on release candidates - 'let the users test it at their cost' philosophy doesn't equate to happy users or a professional service) WIX SUPPORT 1/10 (1 given generously for occasional meaningful support given by Wix staff (excludes forum moderator who is a free volunteer and not Wix staff; worst support ever experienced or witnessed on a web service; automated support is a lesson on why not to use; paid premium support requires begging in the forums for attention!) WIX BILLING 1/10 (scary reports of billing ineptitude by too many customers! this single instance must be frightening off a multitude of potential customers; no lessons seemed to be learned here by Wix; customer confidence in billing administration is PARAMOUNT to people parting with their money!) WIX MANAGEMENT 1/10 (do they really exist? why do they hide away so? how can management let such a good concept fail by seemingly failing to listen and act on the amount of real complaints they get? I am scathing here because their is no excuse for management to act blind to the number of customer complaints, founded or unfounded, in the Wix forums or support emails; a placating post every 6 months by a management member or CEO is not the solution; real actions and frequent communications are the solution to the number of complaints and to rebuilding customer confidence - not the silent arrogance which only fuels further alienation!) WIX CUSTOMER CARE 0/10 (doesn't appear to exist) WIX FUTURE ?/10 (fix these gaping wounds and the future looks rosey)

I have to agree about forum responses and how rude they are. I dropped them like a hot potato because of their childish, rude remarks not only to me but to others when suggestions were made about changes or when questions were asked that was not giving Wix all praise and glory. The service is weak and when I tried to work with it found it lacking on so many levels. Customer Service goes a long way though and the rudeness is what really burnt me with them.

I haven't tried Wix, but after reading their Terms & Conditions, I KNOW I will not try them. Why? I find it strange that they govern their site under the laws of Israel. Customer Service can be lacking in communication. However I'd like to point out that when you go to click the contact form to email them a question/concern make sure you select the option that specifies you are a paid customer. I had an issue with content appearing on every mini page and I emailed several times for DAYS and finally when they wrote back they said that it was because I emailed them via the regular contact form and not premium member form. If a paid member they get email you back within 24 hours. They did clear up my issue so I was satisfied. I've found that this software is very user friendly for a creative minded person that is familiar with this type of software... I didn't use the templates, I wanted to develope a site from scratch. For those in debate of persuing a site I think it comes down to your own comfort level with customer service being 100% over email. I am also bummed they haven't added the ability to put in html code but I know that it is on the horizon so looking forward to that. :)

I love Wix, all the other sites like yola and weebly don't really compare. The only thing that I don't like is the tool bar at the bottom of the page(It gets in my way). I am thinking about the big step and registering with them. The prob is I want to... but I am scared to get screwed over, because I am working with limited funds here! I want to go with them, cause I can make beautiful websites myself without buying the expensive software. If anyone reads this and is with Wix.com, and has more stories about the customer service? Thanks On the fence about wix.com

Where do I start! Wix is the worst company I have ever come across. They work as a beta program (still working the kinks out and adding new things) but charges a butt load for it. They actually expect people to financially support their company while they learn how to make programs or learn what they screwed up in the first place. All without complaints. Nope if you complain about something not working or getting billed beyond belief for something you don't have, your either ignored or given a VERY snippy response by the forum mod Mario or Tayla an actual employee. Basically to just deal with it. They take absolutely no blame on themselves. If your site disappears, they say you did something wrong when in end you haven't touched your site in a week, woke up and the thing was GONE! When I first started my site was unbearably slow, I emailed everyone I could find (since they don't have an actual support line you can call) and posted on the forums that their servers could not handle the load. I was told that I was the only one complaining and that it was my site. All of a sudden 5 more people complained, they changed their severs and HOLY COW! My site was running properly. When my prices for items started going missing, I was told (2 months after my complaint) to just leave it and forward it to the tech guys so they can dissect it to find the problem. So I am suppose to leave my site up with things for FREE just so they can learn off of it?? I just canceled my site and moved to Zen Cart who I have had NO problems with what so ever. Now I have to sit back and wait for the billing issues to start. ^^^ See the post above, this is a normal thing for Wix. Charging people long after they canceled their account. I would never trust in a business that can't even keep its billing department straight. Please check the Wix forums before actually going forward with a purchase and really think if they are worth your time, money and effort. Oh by the way, NO you can not take your site to another hosting company. The site is NOT yours. So if you decide later that Wix sucks and want to leave then you will have to start from scratch somewhere else.

Over a year ago I purchased a monthly service through wix.com. They do websites, and have templates for sites like myspace, etc. Mine was purchased for my business. I used it for a few months, then attempted to cancel my services. After emailing them for SIX MONTHS, I can not get a response. I've threatened to contact the BBB. They didn't respond. I contacted the BBB. I let them know I did. They didn't respond. Since they just keep charging me (but have removed access to my account via their page, so they are essentially charging me for a service I no longer have access to), I've stopped keeping money in the account linked to the debit card that they have access to. I figure a ton of declined charges would be more inconvenient and hopefully costly to them than to just cancel the dang account like they should have 6 months ago when I first contacted them. I've since contacted my bank and am submitted them as a fraudulent charge. I'll hopefully be getting either a new debit card number or a new bank account number so they'll be unable to charge me successfully once I start keeping money in my account again. I wanted to post here and say that wix.com has the most atrocious lack of customer service I've ever experienced. DO NOT use their services. They are obviously a shady company if they knew "enough" that I wanted to cancel for them to remove my access to my account... but are still proceeding to attempt to charge me monthly even after I email them every week or 2. Do not use wix.com

I'm disappointed in wix. I usually use go daddy and I should have stuck with that because wix does not have phone help. You have to email then to reach them and communication was good to average before xmas now i have'nt heard from them and I can't contact them by phone. I need my site up and ready before the new year and I have'nt heard from them. I'm thinking about cancelling my paid membership and starting my site over with go daddy. I searched for days looking for a site that compares to wix and I have found none, there builder is great..that person that must have been stuck under a rock for the past few years that said "looks like something the Mario Bros created as a joke on a christmas party" must have not heard of web 2.0.. anyways..if any of you are skeptical about upgrading dont be..it is by far worth it if you want a site of your own, I pay 10 bucks a month for a site I built that would of cost me thousands of bucks..PLUS for 25 bucks a month you can make an e commerce's store on your own..think about that for all those small businesses that dont want to spend literally thousands of dollars getting someone to make a site like that for you..dont believe me, go price a online store out THEN goto wix check out there builder and tell me if you dont have a day or 2 to make your own professional looking store or site and spend next to nothing to do so.. Wix you literally made it possible for me to thrive on the interwebs and I thank you for your brilliant services.

I am very pleased with this service. And contrary to an earlier post, you CAN create your own site from scratch. You needn't start with their templates. To clarify on price: you can build unlimited wix sites or widgets for free. Each will include a small unobtrusive Wix tag and will probably say "created with wix" as the flash loads in the browser. The site url will be a subfolder under the Wix domain, e.g. www.wix.com/youraccount/eachwixcreation . In order to remove the Wix splashes, references, favicon, etc. or use your own domain url (e.g. www.yoursite.com ) you need to pay to upgrade your wix to premium. Prices range from 5-20 dollars per month, depending on what you need, with great discounts for paying yearly. Their support pages offer clear and simple procedures for using your own domain/url for your wix creation.

I've used Wix for 2 web sites. I previously used FreeWebs (now Webs). Wix is better in terms of attraction and professional looking. I am currently using the free version, and bought a doman from GoDaddy that forwards with masking to my Wix site. Right now I'm trying to decide whether or not to upgrade to premium, but you really can't go wrong. And as far as using a template, I don't. It's much easier and more original to start plain and add in your own pages, buttons, etc. This takes some time and practice, but once you get the hang of it there's really no reason your site can't look great. But see for yourself and judge: www.SoulArtPhoto.com

I just started using Wix to develop a site for a fashion designer friend. It's perfect for that. Great layout and easy to update which is great. I built the first one with Dreamweaver and anytime she wanted to update the information I had to do it for her. Now she can log in and update text or add photos at any time. One feature I would like them to add is the option to create folders. Right now any pictures you add go into the same folder. Start getting more and more photos and the folder becomes overwhelming. It would be helpful to organize that better. But other than that it's great. I'm only using the free site. The only ad is one small Wix tag on the right of the site and it's completely nonintrusive. I'm excited to see what updates will be coming.

I LOVE Wix too! I have used other applications and WIX, by far, has the most user friendly templates. I too created my own website using Wix and learned a little about SEO (very important). I love that Wix mentions that they have more to offer within the next few months and I will be anticipating additions of blog and HTML capabilities. But for now I have the makings of an awesome website, thanks to WIX.

I'm a graphic design student, and i've been using Wix to develop my website for the past week. I learn more each day, and I've taught myself everything on my own. So far, Wix seems very useful, and has solved many of my problems. I could easily pay a web designer to do it the conventional way, but sometimes you have to DIY. Wix is the perfect DIY website utility! 4/5 Stars!

It isn't free. Unless I am missing something. You have to pay if you want to publish your web design don't you?

We tried WIX and Squarespace. Both these online programs offer a lot of sizzle but no steak. We settled on YourWebDepartment. It's the opposite of the other two experiences. You start with nothing and build to exactly the site you want, as opposed to WIX and Squarespace where you start with something that looks hot but then runs out of gas as you try to mould it into the site you want. However, if you are not a designer WIX or Squarespace might be a better bet.

Yeah big claim buddy. I think WIX is an excellent alternative to paying an 'expert' many thousands of dollars for a professional website. I'm a big fan... but then I'm not a web developer professional who is scared of losing work either.

Would you care to share what other tools are out there.

I don't know what you compare it to, but this application looks far from professional. The UI looks like something the Mario Bros created as a joke on a christmas party. There are lots of other tools out there that has a lot of more features and with a superior UI.
