What are the differences to other apps?

Overall, Wikidot offers similar features to other wiki hosting sites. The application has thrown in a few extras that users may appreciate. Users can import their Gravatar to their WikiDot profile and participate in forums. Private messages and custom domain name options further customize the Wikidot experience.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The home page does not have much to be talked about. Use of red and black on a white background gives a subdued impression and the overall site relies more on functionality than on style. Moreover, there is immense scope for improvement in the way information has been organized. Though navigation is not a problem but there is a need for proper structuring. Information has been displayed in an extremely haphazard and random. The only area where one can heave a sigh of relief is the absence of quiet ads or pop-ups.

How does the registration process work?

A new user can join the WikiDot community by clicking the black “Create Account” link in the upper, right hand corner (inside the grey navigation bar). The link takes the user to the registration form. The form asks for a name or alias, email address, preferred language password and Captcha code entry. A link to the WikiDot terms of service is provided below the Captcha code box. The user can complete registration by clicking the grey “I accept the WikiDot terms, please create my account” button at the bottom of the form.

What does it cost to use the application?

Wikidot.com offers users one free and three paid membership options to choose from. The free account includes up to five sites with 300 MBs of storage each and community support. The Pro Lite account costs around $50 per year and includes up to 15 GBs of total storage, the ability to purchase more sites and storage slots and access to newly added features earlier. The Pro account costs around $120 per year and includes up to 10 sites, 50 GBs of storage space and email support. The Pro Plus account costs around $240 per year and includes up to 30 sites, 100 GBs of storage space, the ability to hide karma and pro status and priority email support.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Wikidot is recommended for people who need a considerable degree of coordination and collaboration in the operations and workings. Teachers can set up Wikis to streamline the flow of proceedings. The application includes four membership options which cater to just about anyone, from the casual user creating a wiki for fun to groups and organizations that need a professional, functional wiki.

  • Build multiple wikis (based on account level)
  • Utilize predefined templates for specific wiki elements
  • Select a language for your wiki
  • Integrate Google AdSense on wiki pages
  • Protect data with wiki backups

What happens if I choice to host my wiki privately or elsewhere after having started it on wikidot? The two potential issues I see are: Wikidot may reserve the right to keep the site active even though I would like it to be deactivated. And more importantly transfer of content. How would this be handled?

The statement that customer service is terrible is just plain wrong. There is a very active and very supportive community at http://community.wikidot.com where questions are answered usually within a few minutes and the admins spend a lot of time and effort solving whatever problems people have. Due to this there is rarely any need for a user to send an email direct to Wikidot. The community is not rude or abusive and it is run by talented adults, not kids: support admins range from 21 to over 60 (I am coming up to 50)so the "kids" jibe is very ill-informed.

I've been personally handling direct support (for all inquiries, pro or not) since June 2009 and we get two or three questions a day, and handle them politely and carefully. We don't need to do much customer service because the Wikidot community is so active and helpful. -Pieter Hintjens (CEO, Wikidot Inc.)

Yes. Wikidot is a nice piece of software but the customer service is terrible. They won't even talk to you unless you buy the pro+ plan. They won't even talk to you about buying a pro plan unless you buy the pro plan first and if you push the issue they get downright rude and abusive and start calling names. I think they are a bunch of teenage kids. Talented kids, but rude. I'm sorry I wasted my time with them. It makes me very sad because the site I built with them was beautiful.
