What can you use the application for?
Wikia is a free commercial wiki hosting service aimed at creating communities.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
Wikicities was founded in 2004 by Jimmy Wales. The name was changed to Wikia because the original name caused confusion, people thought the service was about city guides rather than wikis about a wide range of topics. Jimmy Wales is best known as one of the founders of Wikipedia. Wikia is run by MediaWiki software which is originally developed for Wikipedia.org.
Wikia is aimed at hosting Wikis for communities on specific topics with a large audience which are likely to attract enough editors. Wikia approves or disapproves a request to create a wiki based on these conditions and the Wikia guidelines. The largest wikis hosted by wikia are the Star Wars and World of Warcraft communities.
A scratchpad wiki is available for all types of content.
What are the differences to other applications?
Wikia is not available for personal or business wikis but only for communities with potentially large audiences.

What does it cost to use the application?
Wikia is free to use without limitations for all Wikis which are approved by the organization. Wikia is funded by advertising banners on the Wiki pages.
