What can you use the app for?
Voxli is an application designed to allow gamers and teams to have a voice chat over the internet without running up huge phone bills. There are a number of advantages to using voxli; it can support huge numbers of gamers. In fact it’s possible to talk to up to 200 people at once without needing to do anything complicated or set up your own server. The voice chat will be given its own unique URL which is how your friends will access your chat; you just need to copy the link and sent it round to them. Voxli supports both windows and Mac platforms and you simply need to press the right control key when you want to talk. This shortcut key even works outside the browser which means you don’t have to keep the browser on top of your game. At the moment Voxli is free, however it may start charging when they launch the site.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
Voxli launched on the 9th March 2009 and is a Y Combinator company. Currently the site is in public beta and is expected to remain that way for some months. When it is released properly it’s expected that they will start charging for the services offered on the site.
What are the differences to other apps?
Unlike other applications this just deals with voice chat, this is useful because it doesn’t rely on specific games or specific hardware. It can be used on any computer as long as you have an internet connection, microphone and speakers. As it can handle up to 200 users at the same time it will be able to handle most people’s requirements.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
It’s very easy to create your own team, and it’s even easier to join a team that’s already created. When you first try to create a team you will be instructed to download something to check your microphone and speakers. Once you have done this and your account has been configured then you can start using it straight away. The installer is very small but it still takes some time, just be patient it will install eventually.
How does the registration process work?
Registering for an account is done at the same time as creating your first team. You will be asked a series of questions to make sure that your account is set up properly and that your microphone and speakers are working correctly.
What does it cost to use the application?
While voxli remains in beta the service is completely free, however it is expected that they will start charging when the site comes out of beta. How much this will be is unknown but it shouldn’t be any more than comparable services. It is expected to remain in beta for the next couple of months at least.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Voxli is ideal for any gamers that want to chat to people even if they aren’t in the same game. While some games do offer similar functionality they are all tied to that specific game. It’s possible to create a team very quickly and start discussing anything. It’s especially well suited to gamers.
  • Chat with up to 200 people
  • Works in Windows and Mac
  • Chat without browser having focus by pressing right control key

i have used Voxli over the past 3 years and I have no issues at all with it- it allows you to voice chat in most games on your computer- and that is fun, and the mic / always on feature is great too cause you can just chat without hitting any keys

I've used Voxli now for about 6 months with my friends who are learning English. It's a fun application but has some bugs and little in the way of support. Most people don't realize that the owner of the room (the one who registers) has the ability to ban people, paste up youTube videos (by inserting the link in the chat box), and assign other moderators (by giving them your login password). Voxli is sadly lacking in most controls that other chat rooms offer. It's basically a stripped-down basic chat that allows microphone but not video. You can change your avatar but the selection of available avatars are not very appealing. The chat room continues to crash my browser (Firefox 5 and chrome) and kills all sound on my computer until I log out and back in again. Even then it only works for a few minutes. I've tried reinstalling Flash but that didn't help. Overall I'd say Voxli is a lot of fun when it works. However, I think it has a long way to go before they should ask any money for it.
