Visual Thesaurus is an online thesaurus however; unlike many others it creates detailed maps of connected words. This visual representation of the information contained in a thesaurus is easier to understand and much more interesting.
Visual Thesaurus was launched in 1998 and is owned by ThinkMap Inc. It’s built using ThinkMap technology and seems to be a way to showcase their platforms. ThinkMap is a very well known system used by a large number of multinational corporations including Sony and the NOAA. Visual Thesaurus itself is a very popular site because it is completely different to all other thesauruses available on the internet.
There are plenty of thesaurus websites on the internet however this one is a little different. Instead of simply displaying the results in text it lays everything out in a nice and easy to understand format. It is a graphical thesaurus which makes using it more interesting and easier to understand.
Visual Thesaurus is very easy to use and has a very nice and attractive look to it. The home page is a little bit too busy and can be confusing however once you get past that it’s a very enjoyable site to use. To look up a word it’s simply a matter of putting the word into the text box and hitting the search button. There is even a random word function if you are bored and looking for something to do. When you search for a word you then get a mind map style diagram displaying similar and linked words. You can then click on any one of these for more information.
You can try out the thesaurus for free without registering however the number of searches are limited. If you want to use the thesaurus properly then you will have to sing up and pay for a subscription. Registration is pretty easy and you will get a free 14 day trial to check that the application is right for you. When signing up you will need to enter your email address which will be checked.
Visual Thesaurus is not free and although you can perform a few searches for free if you want to use it properly you will have to start paying. Each account comes with a 14 day free trial, after which you will have to pay. It’s quite reasonably priced and costs $2.95 per month, or $19.95 per year. There is also a desktop version available without the internet although this one is priced separately.
Visual Thesaurus is perfect for anyone who needs to use a thesaurus on a regular basis but is looking for a more interesting way to do it. This can make finding new words very easy and even enjoyable! You can click any one of the words for a new map to find more and more related words which are along the right lines.
