Untappd enables users to share their favorite beers with others. The application also gives the user more options to include where they like to go to enjoy their favorite alcoholic beverages. The application includes mobile access through Android phones, iPhones, BlackBerry and Palm devices. Users can stay in touch with friends and share their favorite beers through Untappd, even when their friends cannot join them at the pub or bar. Recent activity is also available on the site and through mobile devices so the user can see what their friends have recently been drinking and where they drank it. Untappd offers users a fun, entertaining way to drink socially.
Untappd was created in 2010 by Tim Mather and Greg Avola. The application was intended to give users an entertaining way to drink socially. Users can share their favorite beverages, watering holes and more through the Untappd network. Friends can stay in touch using Untappd, even when they can’t make it out on Friday night.
Untappd acts much like a mobile social network. The appeal is the application’s focus on beer and alcoholic beverages. Users can see what their friends have enjoyed recently, post their recent drinking excursions and stay in touch through Untappd. The site also features a pub area that lists recent activity feeds so users can see what the community is drinking and where they are drinking it. A sidebar also lists trending macro and micro brews so users can see which beverages are the most popular with other Untappd community members.
The Untappd website has a very stylish color scheme which features an amber background topped with bubbly froth (reminiscent of the view through a full glass of beer. The matching logo is complimented by a pair of black stars with the phrase “Drink Socially” nestled between them. Activity feeds work much like they do on other websites, including the user’s name, what they are drinking and where as well as when the item was posted.
A gold and orange button in the upper, right hand corner of the page that reads “Join Now” allows users to register for Untappd. The first part of the registration process asks the user to select their country and provide their date of birth (the user must be of legal drinking age in their country to register). After clicking the “Next Step” button, the user is asked to provide a username, password and email address. The last step asks the user for a first and last name, location, website URL and a brief bio if they would like to provide one. A note at the bottom of the form advises the user that by submitting their information they are automatically agreeing to the Untappd privacy policy and terms of use.
Untappd is a social network and just like other social networks, the site does better when there are more active members in its community. The application offers membership to anyone for free. There are no subscription fees or other charges for creating an account. This is a great way to keep the community active and growing. No premium paid membership currently exists.
Untappd is ideal for anyone who loves beer and frequently goes out to drink. Users who are not beer drinkers may find little of interest here. The application is intended for those who are of the legal drinking age in their country, so age groups within the community may lean more towards those over 18 or 21 years.
