What can you use the app for?
Twitter is a social network that lets people share status updates in a short, concise format. The application works by giving users access to an account. The user can build up a contact list and followers, who will receive updates each time the user posts a new status. Businesses and others often use Twitter to keep their audiences informed on new developments, changes and issues. A mobile version is available for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows 7 and Blackberry device users. The user can customize the background on their profile and upload an image or photo that is displayed on their account. Twitter limits status updates (called Tweets) to 140 characters so the user is required to keep things short and sweet.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
The concept behind Twitter was born after a brainstorming session by a podcasting company called Odeo. The idea was that an SMS service would be used to communicate with a small group of users. The project was originally named “Twttr”, which was inspired by Flickr and the use of short SMS codes. Development of Twitter began on March 21st, 2006. The very first Tweet was posted at 9:50 PM (PST) the same day. That single Tweet has grown tremendously as the company has expanded. As of mid-2010, Twitter saw around 65 million daily Tweets.
What are the differences to other apps?
There are two main reasons Twitter is unique. The first is the extreme popularity of the website. Today, just about every well-known company, celebrity, musician and many others manage Twitter accounts as well as millions of regular people. The second reason is the concise nature of the application. Twitter limits updates to 140 characters so each update is easy to digest and quick to take in.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
Although each Twitter profile uses different colors, patterns and designs based on how the user set up the profile, each includes the same recognizable elements. A long list of status updates is shown along the left hand side of the profile page with the user’s name, location, avatar image and most recent Tweet at the top. A visitor can also see stats for the profile, including how many Tweets have been posted and how many users are following the profile. New users can easily get the hang of the site and begin building their own list of Tweets and followed users.
How does the registration process work?
A new user can dive right in to the Twitter community because the registration form is presented right on the homepage. The user can fill out the short form (positioned along the right hand side). The form asks for a full name, email address and password. After completing the form, the user can submit it by clicking the gold “Sign Up” button at the bottom of the form. After clicking the matching gold button on the following page, the user is automatically taken to their profile where they can begin adding contacts, interests and content.
What does it cost to use the application?
Twitter is a free service available to all users. There are no subscription fees or other expenses. This has helped the site grow. Many users find that the free access makes Twitter a powerful, economical marketing tool as well as an inexpensive way to stay in touch with family, friends and others.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Twitter.com is ideal for anyone who loves social networking. The application keeps everything concise and to the point with short Tweets. Users can connect with friends, family and the people they know as well as famous celebrities, brands, businesses and others that they might find interesting.
