Twitter is one of the most popular social networks out there. One of the most common things users do on Twitter is share photographs or videos. Although logging in and uploading a media file is generally easy, TwitPic seeks to make it even more convenient. Users can create a TwitPic account (by linking their Twitter account) and upload images or videos in real time. TwitPic works with all popular Twitter clients. Users can post media files from their phone, the website or via email. Users can also search TwitPic to view photos or videos posted by other users. The uploaded files are associated with the Twitter user. By clicking on one of the uploaded files or a user’s profile, all other files uploaded by that individual can be viewed on their TwitPic profile page.
TwitPic was founded in February of 2008 by Noah Everette. Initially, it was intended to provide users with a way to share photographs through Twitter. In 2011, the web app expanded its service by providing video files with the same functionality it offered for photos. It also revised its Terms of Service with respect to copyrights on the content uploaded on their website. Today, the files that are uploaded are protected under copyright laws and belong solely to their respective owner. TwitPic took a serious blow when Twitter announced the release of its own photo sharing capabilities in mid-2011.
TwitPic allows users to easily share their media files on one of the internet’s most popular social networks: Twitter. The application is easy to use as well as convenient. Users can choose between three uploading options. These include uploads from the TwitPics website, from mobile devices or using the TwitPics API.
TwitPics is designed specifically for Twitter. Naturally the site would use some of the same design elements as the Twitter website. The TwitPic homepage includes a light blue background with a stylish TwitPic logo, reminiscent of the Twitter logo. The page also includes some advertisements which appear throughout the user pages. These are somewhat large but are placed in areas that prevent them form being too intrusive. User pages are easy to navigate as well, with the selected photograph or video prominently displayed and thumbnails of other available files presented along the right hand side.
Registering for a TwitPic account is very fast and easy. Naturally, the user must do so through an existing Twitter account. This is a common sense move considering the fact that the application only works with Twitter, so all interested users should have an existing Twitter account. The user can click the light blue “Sign in with Twitter” button found at the top, right hand corner of the homepage to enter their information and begin uploading their media files through TwitPic.
Twitter is a free service, so it would seem a bit silly to have to pay for TwitPic. The application may allow users to upload photos or videos quickly to their Twitter account, but it would require more substance to justify a subscription fee or set up cost. The application is available to anyone with a Twitter account for free. The user only has to log in using their Twitter information to access all TwitPic features.
TwitPic is an application intended only for users who have a Twitter account (or who are going to create a Twitter account first). Those who do not have a Twitter account will get no use out of the application, other than browsing some of the member photographs or videos presented on the website.
