What can you use the app for?

Thinglink is an interactive image tool that gives users a unique way to link things. The user can find an image. Then they can take specific items in that image (“things”) and link them to websites and other online resources. For example, a business owner could find a picture of their business and add a link to their company website. When users see the image, they can access the website. Images can have multiple links added to them for separate items. To use Thinglink, the user installs the Thinglink tool on their website (it is also compatible with TypePad, WordPress and Blogger sites). The user logs in to Thinglink and opens their website in a separate tab. By clicking the Thinglink icon on the image, the user can begin edit mode. In editing mode, the user can click on specific spots to add the link detail. This step allows the user to add both a description and a link.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Thinglink was created to help users tag and link images. The application offers an effective tool for business owners and marketers, who can link images with their website or web store. The current Thinglink team includes Advisor Jyri Engestrom.
In may 2012, Thinglink announced that they have acquired Pixboom, an interactive image tagging service for the Swedish fashion industry.

What are the differences to other apps?

Thinglink gives users an effective way to add links and tags to images. The application gives the user the ability to insert a description and link to an image. It sounds simple, but can actually be a very powerful , effective tool for businesses and organizations who are trying to market their brand.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The Thinglink website provides users with a wide image that spans the entire homepage. Below the image, the user can learn more about how the application works or explore additional photos. By mousing over the image, the user can see various parts that were tagged using Thinglink. The top of the page provides the simple but stylish Thinglink logo as well as three navigational links and the registration box. The application is easy to use, however it requires the user to open multiple tabs in their browser.

How does the registration process work?

A new user can try Thinglink by clicking the yellow “Sign Up It’s Free” button found at the top, center of the homepage. Doing so takes the user to the registration form. The left hand side allows the user to log in with an existing Facebook account. The right side asks the user for a name, email address and password. The user can also check a box at the bottom to receive weekly statistic updates and news about Thinglink. The bottom of the form includes a Captcha code which must be successfully entered to complete registration.

What does it cost to use the application?

Thinglink invites all users to create an account for free. There are no subscription fees or other charges for doing so. All users are given access to the basic features that are currently available. The site notes that Thinglink strives to keep its basic membership free to all users. Although it seems to hint at a premium paid membership, none is listed on the site. It is possible that this could be something added in the future.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Thinglink is a great tool for companies, marketers and others who want to share information about a product or service. The application can also be used in a more entertaining or personal capacity for users who want to link sites or add information to photos.
