What can you use the app for?

TeachStreet brings together classes and students. The site is a virtual marketplace for learning courses. Teachers can post their classes and build a profile. Students can browse through thousands of classes that are available locally as well as online courses. The site provides helpful search tools and assistance when choosing an educator and course. It also automatically gathers the user’s location information as they begin searching, presenting all available classes and popular categories for the user. Courses cover a large variety of subjects, from art history to reading, test preparation, tutoring, musical instruments, languages, business and lifestyle classes. TeachStreet has also included embedded Google Maps so users can easily see where they are and where the class is being held.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

TeachStreet was founded in June of 2007. The application was intended to build a learning marketplace for people who love to expand their knowledge and skills. The company is based out of Seattle, Washington. The TeachStreet team currently consists of less than 10 individuals, including President and CEO Dave Schappell, Chief Technology Officer Daryn Nakhuda and Board Members Dave McClure and Scott Jacobson.

What are the differences to other apps?

There are many websites that help students and educators come together. The service offered by TeachStreet is not really unique. However the site does contain its own unique collection of courses that span a diverse collection of topics and categories. This is what makes TeachStreet so appealing to some ongoing learners.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The TeachStreet website welcomes users with a blue, green and orange color scheme. The pale background creates an attractive contrast against the hints of low key color. The TeachStreet logo features a wavy tree with a brown trunk and varying green hues in the leaves. The site presents a row of blue and white buttons that run across the top of the page to help users find each main area. Overall the design is user friendly and easy to navigate.

How does the registration process work?

A new user can join TeachStreet by clicking on the blue “Join” link in the upper, right hand corner of the homepage. This directs the user to the registration form. The form asks for a first and last name, desired screen name, email address, password, country location, zip code, phone number and whether the user is joining as a student or teacher. An optional text box at the bottom of the form asks the user what they would like to learn. A small note below the green button at the bottom of the form advises the user that by submitting their information, they are automatically agreeing to the TeachStreet terms of service and privacy policy.

What does it cost to use the application?

Users can create a TeachStreet account for free. Students are required to pay the fees listed on the courses they choose to take. Users are not required to sign up for courses, however there is a cost if they do which is based on how much the teacher charges. Teachers can post classes, but will be subject to fees. TeachStreet charges a 2.9% payment processing fee which covers the Paypal fees. Basic class listings are free and allow the educator to include photos, unlimited sessions and access to the listing for 30 days. Pro memberships are also available for teachers. These cost around $30 per month and include unlimited free enhanced listings, 10 free TeachStreet credits each month, customizable profile and banner options, no fees for online enrollment or credit card payments, additional exposure and the ability to connect to an existing registration system.

Who would you recommend the application to?

TeachStreet could be a helpful resource for anyone who is looking for a class or would like to advertise a class. Users will have to pay for their courses, but the site covers a very diverse collection of topics. The site is also very easy to navigate and includes convenient features that make it easier for teachers to manage and advertise their classes.

  • Browse through existing classes
  • Sign up as a teacher or student
  • Post available spaces in classes (teacher accounts only)
  • Add images to class listings
  • View featured classes and discounts

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME! This is a stupid site. You ask for one kind of class and get information on something totally differant. I didn"t ask to join your intrests, I have my own thank you.

Thank you for your comment. We base our star rating on the impression an application makes on us and whether we would recommend it to a friend. It is hard to quantify this impression with obvious benefits or drawbacks, a good user experience is more art then science. Feel free to mention what is good about the application and which positive feedback it received on other websites.

Thanks for the inclusion of TeachStreet -- may we ask why only 3 stars? We're open to criticism, but would love to know what we could do better, to warrant a 5 (or 4) star rating -- thanks! Dave (@teachstreet.com) Founder and CEO
