What can you use the app for?
SwapTree is a website where you can swap your DVD’s, CD’s and books with people all around the country. This makes it easy to get rid of things that you don’t want any more without having to throw them away. When you sign up to the site you are given the option of creating a list of things that you have and want to swap with people. You can also search for things that you might want and add them to another list. When swapping anything the software automatically calculates what you could receive. You can then select the item that you want to receive and print the postage off on your computer. Being able to print postage on your computer means that you don’t have to worry about visiting the post office.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
SwapTree is becoming a very popular way to swap things that you no longer want with people from all around the country. Quite often many people only want to watch a DVD once, and then swap it for something else to watch. With the current economic climate this site is doing very well as people only have to pay the postage to get a brand new DVD to watch. SwapTree.com was renamed to Swap.com in August 2010.
What are the differences to other apps?
Most people will sell things that they don’t want on eBay and other auction websites, and these are perhaps the biggest competitors of SwapTree. However SwapTree is much easier to use, rather than having to list your item and pay eBay fees, you are free to put your item on the site for free. If you manage to swap it then you don’t even need to visit the post office, you can print the postage directly from your computer so you can spend time doing the more important things in life.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
SwapTree is very easy to use and you can quickly find people that have something you want and that want to swap with you. Simply search through the many different products and then click whether you want the item, or whether you have it. If you already have the item then the software will search through people looking to trade and give you a list of possible options. If both people agree to a trade then the postage can be printed and the trade takes place.
How does the registration process work?
If you want to trade items on SwapTree then you will need to register for an account. All accounts are completely free. Simply click the “Join Now” link at the top left of the page, just under the SwapTree logo. You have to be over 13 years old to register on the site and you will have to enter your name and email address. You are then taken through adding your have list and adding items to your want list.
What does it cost to use the application?
Using SwapTree is completely free; the site itself is supported by adverts. If you do want to trade items then you will have to pay the postage amount however this is very convenient as you don’t have to leave your home.
Who would you recommend the application to?
SwapTree is a great way to trade items with other people all around America without having to pay expensive fees to list them on auction sites. This is a very popular site with thousands of different items to swap, so it’s a good idea to spend some time looking to find what you want.
  • Swap things that you no longer want with people
  • Get something you want without having to pay for it
  • Swap books, CD’s and DVD’s
  • Postage printed from your computer so you don’t need to visit the post office
  • Protect the environment by not throwing things away

I've made over 300 trades and only failed to get one item (so far). A couple times people sent me extra items. Maybe 10% of the time has there ever been an issue of an item not meeting or exceeding my expectations, but even then it's nothing I would lose sleep over. It says a lot about how people are in fact reliable, provided you rely on the right ones. That's what the feedback system is for. There is a certain leap of faith required for the system to work, but it does work, and we make a much greater leap of faith when we deposit our money in the bank. Contrary to a couple of earlier comments, there is a way to contact other traders and books are not often damaged. That seems like something a swaptree rival would post.

Sure, you can get good books. But there's no way to message a user about confusion about a book, and they can say they have something when it's actually not as they described it. People are unreliable, there is no way to contact users, swaptree admins do not respond to questions and complaints, books are often damaged, and you get blamed for rejecting trades even if the books are damaged, not the right book, etc. Blamed means you go down on the list to get trades, which means the more unreliable people try to trade with you, the less likely you are to get good trades. And if you try to contact admin about problems, they don't respond. They can't even get books to you that people don't send.

"I left the website long ago after losing money by paying for the shipping of my items and never receiving items in return. Unfortuately I had 5 trades at one time and in 4 of the 5 transactions I was 'ripped' off due to mail fraud. There was absolutely NO Customer Support and even worse I felt the company considered my frustrations as overreacting. It would seem to me that the website has gained an influx of individuals that realize that the website is an easy community to introduce mail fraud to with little or no consequence. Seriously, heed my advice, Customer support is horrible! There are better similar sites on the web and I strongly advise avoiding this website."

Unfortunately it does NOT work well. On my very fist trade, I shipped a DVD out and my "trade partner" was supposed to send me a book in exchange. He never did. Two months later and the team at SwapTree is still looking into the problem. The problem with this system is that you trade with a partner, unlike Paperbackswap or SwapaCd (great sites!!), where you send a book out, win a credit, and with that credit you can "order" from the site members any of the available books and cds, a very smart way of trading books and cds. If you don't ship something out, you don't get anything in exchange. This guarantees the trade, which does NOT happen with SwapTree. I am out of a DVD AND the cost of shipping. Avoid SwapTree.

Swaptree is brilliant! Looked at the baderquest site but barely anyone uses it. Swaptree.com is huge with tons of people and tons of stuff. Way easier to use too. This guys are geniuses!

Hi there, I've checked swaptree but I have to say that I prefer another trading site: http://www.barterquest.com as you're even able to trade services! I was looking for a babysitter and there I just found it, she got a book from Stephen King for her service. The best thing: you can register for free.
