What can you use the app for?

Swap offers users a unique opportunity that allows them to swap an item they have for something they want. The website features four different types of swaps. The Swap Media area allows users to trade movies, books, video games and music. The user lists what they have and creates a second list of items they would like to swap for. When someone agrees to the swap, users ship the items to one another. Swap Local allows users to find others in their community who would like to swap items. Swap Local currently maintains more than 14,000 locations. A Swap Mobile app is also available that gives users access to their have and want lists while on the go. Swap Events encourage users to host their own swap gathering, which could consist of a handful of people or hundreds of individuals who come to a location to party and swap items.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Swap was founded as Swaptree.com in 2004. It was created to give users a way to swap items for things they want and need. The idea was born out of the popularity of general swapping. People frequently gather items that they never use. Swaptree.com was renamed to Swap.com in August 2010. The site currently offers media and local swaps with plans to add a large, international Swap Marketplace in the near future.

What are the differences to other apps?

Rather than allowing users to actually sell items, Swap encourages users to give something and get something. The website allows users to trade one item for another so both parties get something they want without paying anything (other than shipping costs). This not only provides users with more options, it also encourages recycling and gives users a reason to get rid of old items they no longer need.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The Swap website welcomes users with upbeat blues and greens. The round Swap logo features the site name in an elegant white font. A wide blue header bar provides users with access to the Media, Events and Market preview pages. Images of people doing various activities are found throughout among short snippets of information that explain what Swap is and how it works. Item pages include an image of the product, name, release details, description and user rating.

How does the registration process work?

Swap provides users with two login options. Users can click the blue and white “Sign in with Facebook” button in the upper, right hand corner of the homepage to log in with their Facebook profile. Others can click the blue “Join Now” link to the right of the Facebook button to create a new account for Swap. After clicking the link, the user is taken to a pop up box that includes a grey and white “Sign Me Up” button. The button gives the user access to the registration form. The form asks for a username, password, first and last name and email address. The user must also check the white box at the bottom of the form to confirm that they are at least 13 years of age and agree to the Swap terms of use.

What does it cost to use the application?

Swap welcomes all users to create accounts and start swapping for free. There are no subscription fees or other expenses for using Swap. Some products include a “Buy It” button that directs the user to the Amazon product listing for the item; however the user is not required to make a purchase to maintain an account.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Swap.com is a great resource for anyone who has items they would like to get rid of as well as those who are trying to save money. The site allows users to get rid of items they do not want without actually throwing them away.
