What can you use the app for?
SurveyMonkey is a tool which can be used to build online surveys with ease. Building and compiling a survey can be quite complicated, especially if you want the results to be collected over the internet. However thanks to SurveyMonkey this is now really easy. SurveyMonkey makes it really easy for you to design your survey and you can collect responses using a number of different types of questions, including drop down answers, and tick boxes among others. It’s also possible to customize the look and feel of the survey so that it suits your own website. None of the surveys will have adverts on them which means that they always look very professional. Getting people to answer the survey is really easy, it just involves giving them a link, this link can automatically expire when a certain date has been reached if desired. There is also an invitation manager to help you send invitations to people you want to answer the survey. Some plans include powerful tools to analyze the results.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
The SurveyMonkey domain name was registered in 1999, and the site was launched soon after. SurveyMonkey is extremely popular with many internet users because no special knowledge is required to build surveys doing it, it’s also extremely popular with large businesses and over 80% of the Fortune 100 companies regularly use SurveyMonkey.
What are the differences to other apps?
SurveyMonkey is the biggest and most popular survey site on the internet with a number of advanced features. It offers state of the art analytical tools, can support any language including Asian languages, allows you to customize your theme and the option to create many different types of question. Validation can also be added to the survey to make sure that you are getting accurate entries, and a copy of your survey can be converted to PDF to collect answers offline too. The analysis results are second to none, they can be saved as PDF graphs, or viewed as an excel spreadsheet.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
It’s very easy to control SurveyMonkey, as soon as you sign in you are presented with your dashboard. This displays all of the surveys that you have created before, if this is the first time that you’re signing in then this will be empty. To create a survey just click on “Create Survey” and then fill out all of the details. If you want more advanced features which will make creating surveys even easier then it is possible to upgrade to other professional accounts which you have to pay for every month or year.
How does the registration process work?
Registering is particularly easy for this site; you need to enter your personal information including your current email address. You might also like to set your username as your email address so that it’s very easy for you to remember and log in. You do not need to confirm your email address; however they say that they will send important updates about your account.
What does it cost to use the application?
There are free accounts on SurveyMonkey; however these are limited to 10 questions per survey and only 100 respondents per survey. There are also a two paid subscription plans that let you customize the look and feel of the survey, these are either $19.95 per month or $200 per year. Paying the annual fee means that you can have an unlimited number of respondents, whereas the monthly plan is limited to 1000 respondents per month with each extra one costing $0.05.
Who would you recommend the application to?
SurveyMonkey is perfect for anyone that needs to ask people’s opinions, building a survey offline is possible but it’s very difficult. SurveyMonkey makes using and creating surveys a breeze. It’s suitable for schools, universities, businesses and anyone else that needs to survey people. I had issues a few years ago with the continuous renewal. Prior to leaving my last job I had switched the credit card on our work account on SurveyMonkey from my personal card to my boss's work card. When my boss quit and the card was cancelled (I had quit at least 6 months before that), SurveyMonkey then charged my personal card for the renewal. I called, emailed with no response from SM. I had to cancel it through my credit card. They did this every year for 3 years until finally I got a response when I threatened to start a criminal complaint. Not good SurveyMonkey!

I use CreateSurvey, like it, no catch in "free" plans.

If you check the plans & pricing tab before signing up to an account, the limits applied to each account type are pretty obvious. The free account seems to be the only one that limits number of questions per survey and number of responses. I've used SM pretty extensively for the past 3 years and find it a very useful, intuitive tool.

Can you say more about this? Is this limitation tied to a particular plan?

I find it very dishonest that they do not state up front that you will not be able to see more than 100 responses. When all is finished and you have spent time on it you find out that you can't get your results. The front page should state that in bold letters.

Check surveyoctopus.com. It cuts time in half with its simple "drag-n-drop question" feature.

Another interesting application is www.drobots.com. This cloud software could be very interesting for Survey Monkey users. Just load the survey data file into drobots and start creating in depth reports on your survey data. No more spss needed !

I am currently stressed out with SurveyMoneky. I developed a survey requesting demographic information and my participants are receiving a message "ADD Positive Number" before allowing them to move to another question. I am having a backlog on all my participants stating that they cannot complete the survey. I did not choose to program it for this response. What can I do?????? I am losing time and my participants are getting frustrated too. Any suggestions?

We are using mySurveyLab.com (http://www.mysurveylab.com), this is the only on-line survey service we found that is able to prepare customized solution for you. We asked for a specific feature and they delivered it in a 3 days time. Their support is really amazing. I can truly recommend them.

I have the same problem as the poster from 2/11/09. I've asked Survey Monkey for months to assist me with log in problems from their main screen. Very disappointed with their response and customer service. They close my tickets without ever solving the problem...so it looks like they've addressed it, but they haven't. I also think it is beyond irritating that there are no links back to their main site from their help center pages. NONE. The only way I can log in now is to go to the help page, log in from there, go back out to my bookmarks and reload Survey Monkey home page.

Inability to speak to a live person in an emergency makes SurveyMonkey unacceptable.

Surveymonkey is not bad but the design possibilities are very limited. For example it's not even possible to specifiy a max. width for the survey. So the survey will always fill the complete page, looks very bad on wide screens.

I just saw a new review on AppAppeal today for AskItOnline: http://www.appappeal.com/app/askitonline/ It looks like a fantastic alternative to SurveyMonkey - I'll have to try it out!

I too used Survey Monkey in the past with much success. However, recently I created a new account, found I was later unable to access it, and received no response to my multiple attempts at contacting customer service. This was in October of 2008. I had to get a survey out under a tight deadline, so I created a new account, thinking I would get a response from them in a few days and simply cancel the previous account. No luck - I tried for 3 months to get some kind of response before turning it over to our accounting department to deal with. We were billed for both accounts for 4 months before we were finally able to get a response from Survey Monkey. At that point we requested both accounts be closed and credits be issued for the double billings, and while they did issue the credits, they only closed one account and I just now was able to get that resolved. Survey Monkey's response to my criticism of their customer service? A form letter stating "It appears that you failed to hit the second and final Submit button when sending in questions through the Help Center." Way to blame it on the customer, Survey Monkey! Sorry, I cannot recommend this service based soley on how they choose to handle (or not) their customer service.

We've used Survey Monkey successfully in the past. Recently we're totally frusterated at their non-existant customer service. The login prohibits us from logging in and they do not respond to either an attempt to have an email sent verrifying user name and/or password. Nor have they responded to multiple attempts to contact us concerning log in problems, problems with surveys disappearing or being closed but not by us. We'd appreciate it if they would contact us at 651-774-0996 or mgec@mgec.org. Until then, beware of your work with them.
