Stypi is a simple text editor that allows the user to collaborate online. The user can share the link generate by their new Stypi page to get more people involved in a project. The application includes simple text editor tools, including various font sizes ranging from 10px to 24px. The user can also choose a language option, with plain text set as the default. Additional language options include HTML, Groovy, Java, Perl, PHP, SQL, JSON, CSS, Python and many others. The user can also play back the document’s editing history to see how items were changed and when. A full screen view provides more viewing area. The user can access a Stypi as soon as they arrive on the page or track all their Stypis by registering.
Stypi was founded by Jason Chen and Byron Milligan. The application has been covered on numerous online sources, including Venture Beat. The founders intended on building a tool that would do what Google Wave did not. The current version includes minimal features and a watered down editor that is geared towards developers. The team has expressed plans to expand the application’s feature list to include collaborative tools as well as many other web based features.
At this point, Stypi is a very simple text editor. The main draw to the application is its appeal for developers. The user can select from a long list of popular programming languages. The user can also easily invite others to collaborate on a project simply by sharing their Stypi URL. The application makes working with one or more others as simple as possible. The promise of additional features is also enticing, although just how successful those will be remains to be seen.
At first, Stypi isn’t much to look at. A new visitor is greeted by a white text space with a few simple words in plain black text. Three drop down boxes in the upper, left hand corner allow the user to change font sizes, languages and colors. A playback button is also available in the header bar. The application makes each feature very easy to find so the user can get right to work without struggling through a complicated interface.
A new user is not required to register to begin using Stypi. Every visitor is presented with a new Stypi as soon as they visit the website. The user can begin sharing their Stypi with others or jump right into editing text. Users who want to access all features can click the black “Create Account” button along the left hand side. A small pop up box asks the user to provide a name, email address and password. The user is automatically logged in after submitting the registration form.
Stypi is available to all users for free. There are no subscription fees or other charges required when starting a new Stypi session or inviting others to join in. The user is given access to all of the application’s current features (which are really rather limited at this time). The founders have mentioned plans to grow the application’s feature list so it is possible that a subscription option may be added later. For now, anyone can use Stypi for free.
Stypi is a text editor intended primarily for developers. Others could use the application for very basic text editing, however they will not appreciate the current features as much as a developer would. Users who are working with others can easily collaborate on Stypi without paying for accounts or making their collaborators sign up for a new account. Stypi is easy to use and presents the user with a practical interface.
