What can you use the app for?
Stylefeeder is a personal shopping search engine. Users input items that they like and StyleFeeder generates new items for them to consider. A bit like what Genius on iTunes does for music. The appeal of this site is that it is like having a personal stylist recommending many of the latest products for users to easily consider. Instead of milling through the unlimited number of fashion sites out there, users can simply "feed" this app their favorites and it will do all of the heavy lifting for them.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
StyleFeeder was released by Philip Jacob, a software architect, in 2005. Other members of his team include Shergul Arshad, Dina Pardel, Dr.Jason Rennie and Eric Savage who collectively contributed towards its creation. The idea of the site originated from the difficulties which Phil and his wife faced while they had to buy light fixtures for their home. StyleFeeder is a site gaining in popularity and in January 2012, listed that they had "1 million registered StyleFeeders, 2 million monthly shoppers and 6 million monthly page views." StyleFeeder has been acquired by Time Inc. in January 2010.
What are the differences to other apps?
StyleFeeder is easy to jump into right away. Not a lot of setup is required to begin using the site. Of course, as users interact more with StyleFeeder, the more accurate and personal its recommendations become. The accuracy of its personal style algorithms and its ease of use are the main differentiators for StyleFeeder vs. other "personal shopping" applications.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
StyleFeeder's ease of use and how quickly users can jump into its features are both impressive. There are cute characters who act as one's personal assistant and can make them feel special. Overall the site is laid out well. There are ads strategically places throughout the site. They are just minor annoyances, and do not take away too much from the site's appeal.
How does the registration process work?
Initial registration requires a username, password and an email address. Users then complete a quick survey describing their age, gender and some of their interests (i.e. fashion, books, music, electronics, etc.). From there users can access the site, find their style twins, use the personalized search engine and more.
What does it cost to use the application?
StyleFeeder is available to all users for free. There are no subscription fees and the user doesn’t have to make a purchase to maintain account access. All users are given the same level of access and can utilize all basic features. StyleFeeder makes supports itself based on ad-revenue and investors.
Who would you recommend the application to?
StyleFeeder is a great resource for consolidating a massive amount of products from across the internet into a single, easy-to-use platform. It's predictive recommendations are also very useful and can simplify the online shopping experience. Anyone who regularly makes purchases online should definitely give StyleFeeder a look.
