Stixy is designed to provide a web-based bulletin board for posting information, photos, documents, and to do lists. By posting information to the Stixyboard, users can organize and share information quickly and easily. The intent is to increase productivity by allowing users to post whatever content they want in a very flexible manner, similar to a bulletin board. Founded by Jonas Höglund and Anders Ottoson in 2007, Stixy was presented as an alternative to existing information management systems. They were dissatisfied with the restrictions imposed by other available online options and wanted to create a flexible, easy interface for everyday users. The interface was initially met with enthusiasm when it debuted at the TechCrunch conference in San Francisco, CA. Since its presentation, there have been very few updates or increases in functionality. A compete.com traffic analysis shows a decline in unique visitors from nearly 6,000 in January 2009 to less than 1,000 in January 2010. The main difference found in Stixy is the ability to fully control the layout and organization of material. The design was created to reflect the way individual people think. Everyone looks at things differently, so with Stixy they can arrange their content in a way that makes sense to them. Visually, the Stixyboard is very appealing. The workspace is clean and uncluttered. Photos upload very quickly, but are limited by size to 4 MB per image. To do notes are customizable with date and time of events and offer an optional setting to send an email reminder for 15 minutes to one week in advance of the event. Users choosing to utilize the Calendar option will have to do notes automatically added to the Calendar. Sticky notes may be created in a variety of colors with multiple font choices. Documents of up to 50 MB may be uploaded, but the content is not fully displayed on the Stixyboard. An icon for download is created and placed on the board. Every element may be arranged as desired on the Stixyboard by drag and drop. If a user wishes to keep an element from being moved or altered, a check box for locking the widget is offered. Sharing a Stixyboard with someone may be accomplished by providing their email addresses. They receive an invitation email with a link. When rearranging elements, the widget menus pop up each time, which can be distracting. There are no options for adding shapes, colors, or freehand notes. While others may add to or edit content, changes are not made in real time. The page must be refreshed to see the most recent revisions. If changes are not saved prior to refreshing, those changes will not be saved. Users may not view the content of documents without downloading. Simply provide an email address and choose a password. No further information is required. A welcome email is sent, but no activation is necessary. Users may begin to create Stixyboards immediately. Inviting others to the board is easily accomplished and an email invite is instantly sent to each person. Stixy is free and members can create as many Stixyboards as they want. This application is aimed at the everyday user who is looking for a way to share information with others online. The bulletin board inspired look is designed to be user friendly and fun. The flexibility of sharing tasks, notes, pictures, and more makes this a useful tool for families and classrooms. Businesses that are looking for productivity software will likely look elsewhere for a more functional collaboration tool.
