Society6 is a community created to connect artists with opportunities to meet others and have their work printed on various products and sold on the site. It supports emerging artists by providing an outlet for their work to be seen. Individuals, corporations, or nonprofits can issue grants to artists for smaller amounts than traditional grants through Society6. Society6 was founded by Lucas Tirigall, Justin Cooper, and Justin Willis in 2009. Their vision was to support emerging artists by bringing attention and opportunity to creative people. Society6 not only allows artists to display their work online, but it allows them to upload high quality versions that may be added to items such as t-shirts and prints and sold for profit. Artist may also receive grants through the site. The application is relatively intuitive. Prior to posting any artwork, a user must create a studio. A studio name is required and a custom URL is created. The artist provides a short description of the studio as well. Users may then upload work. Within the studio, users may upload an image, leave comments, or share the listing via StumbleUpon, Facebook, or Twitter. Products are made on demand and include canvases, t-shirts, and skins for laptops and iPhones. After an order is placed, the artist is paid via PayPal and the order is filled by Society6. Users must provide a first and last name, user name, password, and email address. Use of Society6 is free for those uploading their work. Anyone wishing to purchase products with artwork on them must pay the cost of the item plus shipping and handling charges. Retail prices are determined by the artist and these prices then affect the profits to the artist. Prior to selling, users must become PayPal verified at the cost of $1/year. Artists and graphic designers who wish to display their work online and promote it as graphics for purchase on items may benefit from joining Society6.
