Snipplr helps users organize and find snippets of code. The website gives users a few popular search filters, including JavaScript, HTML, PHP, CSS, Ruby and Objective C. Users can also opt to view all available code. A search tool bar makes it easier to locate code by keyword. When viewing a snippet of code, the user is given the basic necessities, including the text box containing the code and options to expand, embed or view in plain text. Users can also Tweet code or report spam directly on the code page. The code page also shows the user who posted it, when it was posted and a drop down box to each version. Snipplr users can post comments to a code page to give it a good rating, thank the poster or provide additional resources.
Snipplr launched on June 27th, 2006. The application was created because there was a need among coders for a better way to save, store and find code. Rather than re-type the same code again and again for each project, Snipplr gives users a fast way to find and copy lines of code. Since it was first introduced, Snipplr’s database has grown to include over 37,535 snippets. Approximately 15,805 were added in the past year alone, with over 1,300 in the last month. The site continues to grow, with more than 34,300 users.
Snipplr gives users an easy way to store, share and obtain code. This is very helpful for professionals or casual coders who work on multiple projects and may need to go back to the same snippets of code time and time again. Through Snipplr, users can get the code they need without retyping it each time. The search tool is fast and the user can simply copy and paste the lines right into their project.
The Snipplr website has a well-organized appearance that works very effectively for its purpose. Users can see recently added and popular snippets right on the homepage. A search tool bar is found along the header in the upper, left hand corner. A banner that runs the entire length of the top of the Snipplr website provides advertisements, but these are generally subtle and have a tech focus (making them relevant). The banner actually seems to blend well with the rest of the Snipplr website, so it is easy to ignore it if the user is not interested. Four blue and black navigation tabs are positioned in the upper, right hand corner to help users move through the site.
A new user can create a Snipplr account by clicking on the blue “Register” link along the right hand side of the homepage. Doing so takes the user to the registration form which requires a username, password, email address and a simple math problem to prove that the user is a human being. After filling out the form, the user can click the black and white “Create Account” button at the bottom to complete registration.
The cost of Snipplr is another attractive feature. Users can create accounts and utilize all features for free. There are no subscription fees or other charges for accessing Snipplr. Users can post comments and participate in the online community as well. This is a great choice because it encourages more users to participate and post their snippets of code.
Snipplr is a helpful website for anyone who handles code. Developers and designers can obtain simple lines of code to speed their projects along. Users can also store their snippets of code rather than keeping them in documents on their desktop.
