What can you use the app for?
SlimTimer is a simple solution for users who need to manage timesheets and tasks. The application lets the user create a new task which can be shared with coworkers and team members. The user can open the application to begin tracking time spent on a task. The user simply begins the built in timer while they work then stops it when they have finished their work session. The user can check off any completed tasks and close the browser when they are finished. The application also provides reporting tools that shows the user how they are spending their working hours. Reports also track team member’s hours and can be exported as an Excel spreadsheet.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
SlimTimer is a Ruby on Rails project developed by Richard White. The concept was born out of White’s need to track his own worked hours. After seeing the potential value offered by SlimTimer, White decided to offer it as a service to other professionals. Some users felt that while SlimTimer was easy to use, it wasn’t very intuitive and not worth the fee required to upgrade. The application has logged over 14,000,000 hours.
What are the differences to other apps?
SlimTimer is a simple tool, however that also means it lacks some of the functionality of other similar applications. The site notes plans for additional upcoming features, including the ability to email reports to others (something that many other time tracking applications already offer). The site doesn’t allow free members to download reports, and the fee to do so is a bit high for the functionality included with a paid membership.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
SlimTimer uses a relatively well organized interface, although some users may feel a bit overwhelmed as they work. The user is presented with neat boxes and lists with simple text and green and red highlights. The user can quickly add tags and comments to tasks or select specific tasks as they work. The interface has a very bland, dated look to it that doesn’t live up to the expectations met by other time tracking solutions.
How does the registration process work?
A visitor can create a SlimTimer account by filling out the green form presented along the right side of the homepage. The form asks for a full name, email address, password, preferred date and time format as well as a preferred time zone. The user is advised that a confirmation message has been sent to the email address they provided before being logged in to their new SlimTimer account.
What does it cost to use the application?
SlimTimer offers free access to its basic time tracking features to all users. After creating an account, the user can choose to upgrade. Upgrade prices vary based on the number of hours the user has tracked. Monthly subscriptions start as low as $2. Subscribers are given weekly backups, access to email support, no advertisements and the ability to download data as a CSV file. Teams can also upgrade, however the user must contact SlimTimer to obtain a quote.
Who would you recommend the application to?
SlimTimer is best suited to users who want a simple way to track their hours worked without filling out an Excel spreadsheet every day. The free account might be worthwhile to someone who doesn’t have high expectations however others may find that paying for the amount of service received isn’t a good value. This may change as SlimTimer adds new features however the current planned updates list doesn’t look terribly enticing.
