What can you use the app for?
Readernaut.com is a social networking site for avid readers. Readers can use the site to search for books and read descriptions, reviews, comments and opinions left by other readers. Users can maintain lists of books that they are reading or planning to read. When a search on a particular topic or book is performed, the results are returned in a list form with a thumbnail image of each book shown by its list entry. The user has an Add button with a dropdown list – the user can choose to Add the book to one of several lists. These lists include Reading, Finished, Plan to read, Reference, Wishlist and Abandoned. Clicking on a book in the list of search results returns a detailed description of the book. Users can search Amazon, Books (Books listed by users on the site), Notes (notes written by users pertaining to the topic), Users (searches other user's lists for the topic), or Tags, which searches Tags which have been assigned to books by readers. Users have a profile on the site and can have Friends. Users can search the major social networking sites or the Readernaut userbase for Friends. The site Friends search can be conducted by name or topic, which makes it easy for user's to find friends with similar interests. User's can import lists of books from other services, including LibraryThing, Shelfari, Good Reads, Anobii or a list of ISBNs.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
Lawrence, Kansas-based Readernaut.com was launched into public beta in June 2008.
What are the differences to other apps?
Competition to Readernaut.com comes from sites such as LibraryThing and Shelfari. LibraryThing charges members if their list contains over 200 books. They have special features for organizations such as church and school libraries, and charge for this service. Readernaut is currently free – what the site plans to do after beta is unknown. Shelfari offers a similar service to Readernaut, is also free, and is advertising supported.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
The Readernaut.com site has a very pleasing and uncluttered look and feel. Navigation is primarily intuitive, although there is some duplication of menus entries on the same page. The site is very responsive and page loads happen quickly. Search results are returned promptly as well. There is a convenient navigation menu shown in the left pane of all pages on the site. Menu entries include Activity (a summary of the user's activity), Books, Notes, Lists, Tags, Friends and Profile. There is no advertising displayed on the Readernaut.com site.
How does the registration process work?
Registration to Readernaut.com is free and is required to use the site. The registration process asks for first and last name, email address and password. The site only displays the user's last name to their Friends.
What does it cost to use the application?
There is no premium membership offered to the site.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Readernaut is recommended to avid readers everywhere. The site makes it very easy to search for new books to read, maintain lists of books in the users library, and participate in the community by writing notes about books they have read. At the time of writing, user-contributed content was rather sparse – this should change as the site continues to grow.
