What can you use the app for?
Prezi is an application which makes it possible to design presentations online. It’s a unique flash based application that changes how you can create presentations. It means that you don’t need to worry about creating individual slides, you can create non linear presentations and then you can zoom in and out of a map containing all of your information. The application is actually fairly similar to pptPlex which offers a similar type of functionality in PowerPoint. It’s difficult to explain how to use it, but it’s not difficult to use. The best way to learn how to use the software is to look at the example presentations and have a play with the system yourself. Prezi is different and so it does take some getting used to, but after a bit of practice you will find that the user interface is quite intuitive. There are also plenty of help videos which will help you to create presentations for the first time.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
Prezi was developed by Zui Labs which was formed in 2008; the company has links to Kitchen Budapest media lab which is where the concept for prezi was created. Prezi itself was launched on 15th December 2008 and it still remains in beta.
What are the differences to other apps?
Prezi develops slideshows in a different way, instead of creating slide based presentations you can use this application to create non-linear presentations. It’s possible to zoom in and out of a map rather than moving between slides. When watching presentations the interface is very nice and easy to use, it’s also much more attractive than many other online presentation applications.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
The application is designed entirely in flash and it’s a real pleasure to use. It’s quick and snappy although it can take some getting used to. This isn’t because the interface is bad, it’s actually because the concept is completely different. The tool is designed very well and has a nice interface; it just takes some time for people to get used to the idea of a presentation without having to create individual slides. It’s certainly worth it though because you get a much more engaging and interesting presentation than you would otherwise. If you are struggling to use the system at first then there are plenty of online help videos which are great to make sure you know how to use the application properly.
How does the registration process work?
Registering for an account with prezi is very easy. The very first thing that you need to do is choose a license, there are a number of different packages including a free basic package. Once you have chosen the license you then need to fill out a registration form. When you have filled the form in you will then be sent an email, you need to confirm your address by clicking the link inside the email message.
What does it cost to use the application?
Prezi offer a number of different packages including a free package. The free package is known as “public license” and comes with 100MB storage space, and an offline player. All of your presentations will have the prezi logo on them and all presentations will be published publicly in the showcase. The enjoy plan has 500MB of storage space, no prezi logo and the ability to create private presentations. This plan costs $59 per year. The top of the range Pro package comes with an offline editor and 2GB of space. The Pro accounts cost $159 per year. There are also a number of other optional extras all of which cost more money.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Prezi is ideal for anyone that wants to create presentations but doesn’t want to have to create slides. This is a great way to create interesting and great fun presentations which are much more engaging and less boring than normal slide shows!
  • Create non linear presentations
  • Offline creator on paid plans

Prezi shows would be good in theory, but in practice the transitions always are jittery and sometimes stall. Additionally having run several conferences where some of the speakers have used Prezy, while it looks fine on a computer screen, as soon as you or using a large projector screen your audience are going to hate you - I've known people to leave the room because the constant motion of the transitions made them feel ill. It also falls on its face when you are doing anything but static, simple slides. Anything remotely technical quickly becomes impossible. Overall if you are doing a short show, with simple slides in a meeting room on a large TV screen, it may help you hold your audience's attention if you want the slides to be the main attraction (I've yet to see it add any actual substance to a talk). Otherwise, I can only recommend the traditional presentation suites. I'm in agreement with the poster above - warn your audience first if you are using Prezy.

It's a whole new fresh concept to make presentations, I like it! But still, this app still needs a lot of improvement. Don't stop working it out, Prezi!

Great idea... in theories but doesn't deliver in application. Sluggish, poor intuition, heats up my Macbook Pro like no other, freezes a lot, scrolling is ridiculously annoying. I dislike the multiple-edit feature.

great idea but software implementation very clunky. Buttons don;t work, autoplay unpredictable. Browser/Flash incompatibilities and very poor error messaging/documentation. Not ready for prime time.

Negative Nacey... prezi is great. You font size/color people are not opening your mind to the use of video and pics. Embed your font into the pic or incorporate an image of your desired font. Don't limit... think outside the powerpoint box people.

Yep - thought it was a good idea and then couldn't put a word in bold - complete style over substance car crash

Yeah, I saw a few Prezi presentations, fell in love with the overall idea, and came up with a few concepts for my own. However, all my concepts required the ability to use two different font styles/colors -- of my choosing; not of a pre-made style -- in the same document -- and you can't do that! It's actually completely impossible! I've never seen a better concept completely undone by so petty a deficiency. This is a stellar opportunity for a competitor to move in and create a vastly better product just by adding one trivial feature...

I agree with Lisa. It is very good for only a certain niche of presentations. Not good for technical stuff at all. I quit.

How come no one is talking about what Prezi doesn't do? You can't even change the color of text, or choose a font style, or size. Prezi looks interesting, so I downloaded and paid for the pro version (no extra features, just the ability to work and store work offline). I never thought to check to see if I could bold or underline text, or change my text from red to black, before paying for the software. Who would think these options wouldn't be available? A quick check of the Prezi user forums reveals that people have been asking for this feature for well over a year. Prezi's standard response "that's interesting - tell me how you would use the option to change font colors?" or "I have worked at a university for over 7 years and have never had to underline anything." All thumbs down for Prezi.

Power Point killer? Don't think so! The whow! factor wears off very quickly. It's a presentation killer app. Just warn the audience that they in for a spinnig-zooming experince.
