What can you use the app for?
Polyvore.com is a fashion 2.0 website that allows users to put together complete outfits by dragging and dropping images from the site or from the web. It is also a social networking site for users interested in fashion. Users can explore or search the various Looks that others have created, or create their own. Users can also use the Shop feature to locate links to buy all of the individual items shown in a particular Look. The convenient drag and drop editor makes it extremely easy to create a Look and share it with others on the site. There is an active user community that comments about and discusses the various Looks.
The site features a convenient top menu bar for navigation. Options on the menu bar include My Home, where users can see all of their own Looks, as well as their messages and other’s looks that they have saved as favorites, Shop, where users can search or browse Looks and find links to buy the items contained in them, Explore, where users can browse or search the various Looks created by others, and Create, where users can create their own looks. Users can also message other users from their My Home page, edit their profile which is visible to other users on the site, and see all of the comments they have left about other user’s Looks. Looks are not limited to fashion – interior design and décor Looks are found on the site as well.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
Pasha Sadri, Jianing Hu and Guangwei Yuan launched Polyvore.com in February 2007. Pasha Sadri is the man responsible for creating Yahoo Pipes. The company is headquartered in Mountain View, CA.
What are the differences to other apps?
Polyvore’s competitors include ShopStyle and Style.com. Both of these sites allow users to upload various Looks, and to browse Looks created by others. Neither site has the same level of social networking as that offered by Polyvore. In addition, neither site has anything resembling the drag and drop interface used by Polyvore for creating Looks. Both of these sites have more users than Polyvore, but Polyvore continues to grow.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
Polyvore has a very clean and uncluttered look and feel. The top menu bar is shown on all pages on the site, as well as a convenient search bar. Navigation is intuitive and obvious, and pages load quickly. The Looks editor is surprisingly responsive for an online tool, and is very user-friendly in its interface. The site maintains a blog and a full-featured Help section as well. There is no advertising displayed on the site.
How does the registration process work?
Users can browse through the Looks created by others without registering at the site, but in order to Create Looks, message others, or save favorite Looks, registration is required. The registration process simply asks for a display name, email address and password. Verification of the email address is required.
What does it cost to use the application?
Registration is free and there is no premium membership available. Registered users have full access to all of the site’s features.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Polyvore is recommended to anyone with an interest in fashion. It is especially recommended to users searching for a new look, or those who would like to share looks that they have created. The site is an especially useful tool for new or experienced fashion designers wishing to practice their skills. Many users advertise in their profile that they are “taking requests”, and offer to build a special look for other users. The site is very easy to use, and no special computer knowledge is required to use the Looks editor on the site.
