Plancast is a social calendar. Users submit plans and friends can then see the plans via Twitter or Facebook feeds. Friends can join Plancast to indicate that they wish to join in the planned events. Online since July 2004, Plancast is the creation of Worldly Developments’ owners Mark Hendrickson and Jay Marcyes. The application officially launched in November of 2009. While the popular application Foursquare encourages users to post about what they are doing from the location of the event, Plancast is “Foursquare for the future” with users posting planned events with locations. This is more interactive than a traditional e-vite and works well by integrating social media tools. Plancast is simple and uncluttered. To enter a plan, users simply enter what, when, and where in the appropriate blanks. Google maps supplies a map to the indicated location, but can be blocked if desired. Plans are then posted to the user’s Twitter or Facebook and friends may click the link, join Plancast, and indicate that they will be attending the event. Name, username, password, email, location, and time zone are necessary for registration. Users then choose whether to share with Facebook or Twitter friends. If none are using Plancast, users may choose friends to invite to the application. Plancast is completely free to use. This would be useful for people in businesses who wish to subscribe to the plans of clients or other industry executives to prioritize what events to attend. Until it is adopted more widely, the site is not terribly effective, other than as a tool for posting plans to Twitter and Facebook which can be done easily from other social media applications.
