PHP Anywhere’s logo says it all, “coding on the go.” This application provides users with a way to take their programming tasks with them. Where ever an internet connection is accessible, PHP Anywhere can be accessed. The site offers a free integrated development environment for use with PHP. All work is completed in a browser and saved to the site. Users never have to worry about moving files or copying to another computer. Simply log in and resume work exactly where it was left off using the PHP Anywhere application.

Since its launch in September of 2008, PHP Anywhere has been providing an easy work solution for programmers all over the world. The goal from the beginning has remained the same: provide users with an easy way to access programming projects anytime from almost anywhere without having to pack up your computer and bring it along. PHP Anywhere has increased in popularity since its initial release, offering more streamlined features for users. PHPanywhere.net was renamed to Codeanywhere in May 2011.

PHP Anywhere caters to the traveling programmer. While many business-oriented applications focus on scheduling, management, planning and social elements, PHP Anywhere has brought code into the spotlight. No matter how large or small the job, users can enjoy more flexibility that will not interfere with travel. Rather than packing up desktop computers, just bring a laptop or use computers on-site to continue working on programming tasks or start new projects. The less expensive equipment that needs to be taken along, the less the risk of theft or damage becomes. Projects are also kept secure through the website login to prevent unwanted computer users from accessing vital project files.

PHP Anywhere provides users with a basic interface that comes with minimal clutter. While the main account page seems slightly awkward, with the purple half banner and link lists that seem a bit out in the open it is in general easy to navigate. FTP Servers and projects can be found in a left hand sidebar while open projects, and important website links are located in the welcome tab at the center of the page. The site design contains many professional components, but could use some fine tuning in terms of layout.

After clicking the sign up link, new users are asked to enter a name, password, email address, and validation code. After checking the terms of service agreement box, click register and return to your email. A validation link will be sent and must be clicked for account access. The process takes only a few minutes, with the validation code sent almost instantaneously. Overall, the account creation process is very easy and straight forward.

PHP Anywhere is available to users at no cost. Whether or not the cost will change remains to be seen because the application is currently in beta. Once the layout is refined and additional features have been added and expanded upon, an upgraded account option may become available. For now, all users can really appreciate the no-cost access offered by PHP Anywhere.

Any programmer who is required to travel regularly can really enjoy the benefits of PHP Anywhere. Although non-programmers will find it utterly useless, those who are responsible for coding tasks can utilize this application for greater flexibility. Even if travel is not a requirement for employment, programmers can use PHP Anywhere to gain access to projects while on vacation or traveling for pleasure. This access can open up many possibilities in terms of scheduling.
