Ning is a social website builder that lets users bring their audiences together in one centralized location. The user can select a design from a list of pre-made themes. The application also includes 80 design settings to further customize the look of the user’s social website. The user can also make further changes through the CSS. Users can organize events on their social pages and include member profiles that allow their audience members to create a personal space within the online community. Discussions can be started through forms, activity streams, chats and groups. User generated content can also be displayed as images, comments, blogs, videos and voice opinions. Ning includes built in integration with YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Revenue features are also available for businesses.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
Ning was founded in October of 2004 by Marc Andreessen and Gina Bianchini. The application was acquired by Glam Media in September of 2011 for $150 million. Ning has enjoyed popularity as well as a few controversies. In August of 2008, the application banned widget Laboratory. The debate became heated after a TechCrunch article was posted discussing the incident. The following December, the application announced it would no longer permit pornographic content. In 2010, the search function was removed as well as free networks.
What are the differences to other apps?
Ning is a website builder that focuses on social networking and related tools. The user can create one centralized place to bring their fans, followers and customers. The application makes building a social website easy and quick. The user can create a stylish site that looks professionally designed and provides a number of functions that allow users to interact, share thoughts and opinions and learn more about the business, professional or brand.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
Ning welcomes users with a modern style that gives it an attractive edge many users can appreciate. The user interface is clean, clutter free and sleek in design. Each tool is easy to find and the completed social webpage looks professional enough for a business to share with clients and internet followers. Data is presented in lightly colored charts so the user can retrieve their information in digestible portions. The interface moves smoothly and the user experiences no delays as they design.
How does the registration process work?
New users can click the green “Get Started” button at the top, right hand corner of the Ning homepage. The next page asks the user to choose their preferred subscription plan. After clicking the corresponding orange button, the user is asked to provide their full name, email address and password. The second part of the form asks for a name for the user’s social website, a preferred URL and payment information.
What does it cost to use the application?
Ning offers users three subscription options to work with. The first is a Mini subscription for $2.95 per month. The Mini plan includes access for up to 150 members, 1 GB of storage space, no advertisements, blog, photos, forums, custom “like” buttons, embedded videos and the ability to add up to two Ning apps. The Plus plan costs $24.95 per month and includes up to 10,000 members 10 GBs of storage space, chat and up to five Ning apps. The Pro plan costs $59.95 per month and includes unlimited members, 20 GBs of storage space and up to 10 Ning apps.
Who would you recommend the application to?
If you are looking for a social networking site where you will find many long, lost friends, then Ning isn't the place for you. However, Ning is a useful application if you want to set up an interactive and customized fan site or community page, but don't want to invest the time and resources involved in building a true website.
  • Quick to design and publish a new social website
  • Chat, forum and other interactive features can be added
  • Members can create profiles that are displayed on the site
  • Three subscription plans offers a diverse collection of features
  • User can run ads and manage email marketing campaigns

I have a ning network and I am ashamed I didn't do more research. The customer service is almost non-existent. Everything Curtis said is true: "I have 6 ning networks, been with them a long time. The customer service gets worse and worse. When they started charging for any network is when the support really got bad. They bill on networks even after you close the networks. The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. They have a good business plan, but POOR execution. They will soon loose all my business because they only support me when I don't need anything. No phone support, simple email support requests take days or weeks for responses, and if you try to have a back and forth conversation, each message is answered by someone different, making things almost impossible. Feels like some kids in a dorm room taking your money then making the support system unusable intentionally so you leave them alone. " - Curtis I give Ning 1/5 stars, the one star simply for offering the service. The 2nd star is so far out of view I doubt they'll ever earn it. I hate Ning more than any company I've ever done business with. The only reason I stay with them is so my members can con

I hate Ning more than any company I've ever done business with. The only reason I stay with them is so my members can continue to interact. Believe it or not, they are 100x worse than Dell customer support (if you've ever tried to deal with that, you know what I'm talking about). Dont' ever do business with Ning. They are indeed "kids in a dorm room taking your money then making the support system unusable intentionally so you leave them alone." I could never have said it better. Ning has a Better Business Bureau rating of F: http://sanjose.bbb.org/Business-Report/Ning-Inc-245024 They deserve worse.

Ning. Hate it so much. I have a network on ning. I paid regularly. but then they have new plan&pricing. I refuse to accept that. then they shut down my network. which is ok. fine. My network is no longer active. but they still charging me for the old plan price.!! what the hell. Already send message to their admin. but no response. I have to go to the Bank to cut off the payments of my auto-Credit card Payment. I suggest DONT make any network on Ning platform. they have poor plan of revenue model that keep changing from time to time. This will affect the community you have been building and nurturing. its gonna waste your time, months and months of building network on Ning. I suggest build with PROPER FREE platform. Or ust build your community on facebook, which is even stronger and bind with the whole world. Forget about NING.

I had set up a social network for my site http://casinopartyatlanta.com/ on Ning and now they want to charge for the service. Apparently, they didn't get enough users to sign up, so they "extended" the deadline to sign up for their paid services. What they haven't realized, is that most other social media sites are free. I predict they'll be gone before long.

The customer service at NING is horrible. You have to send in a ticket and who knows when you will hear back. You can't reach anyone by phone.

It's not 100% free. The amount of the members is limited by the bandwith limitation.. If the limit is exceeded they block our group, and we have to pay. There are premium prices waiting, when we've reached certain number of members.

I created a network on Ning. Have been trying to change it's theme for past three days. No luck. * Followed the help. Leads to failure. * Posted on the community forum. Hardly any useful response. * Tried submitting a ticket: FAILED. * Sent an email to the CEO as invited on their page. No response. Enjoy if this thing is working for you. Not working for me.
