What can you use the app for?
MyHeritage helps you to construct your own family tree as easily as possible; the website itself is based in Israel and is a useful tool if you are considering building your family tree. It also does much more than just allows you to start a family tree, it also allows you to share photos and research information. There are over 260 million profiles on the system all of which have been submitted by 25 million members. It’s also possible to use the system to see two family trees side by side to find out about any overlaps and link more than one tree together to make a much bigger tree. The application has very useful face recognition technology which will automatically tag any photos showing the people that appear in the photos.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
MyHeritage was created by Gilad Japhet. In September 2008 they acquired Kindo Network. The company is based in Israel quite close to Tel Aviv. Competitors of MyHeritage include Ancestry.com and Geni.
What are the differences to other apps?
The best feature about MyHeritage is the addition of a very useful and surprisingly accurate face recognition system. This face recognition system will automatically identify the people in a photo and tag them accordingly. This makes it possible to find photos of certain people pretty easily using the site.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
The application itself is designed in a friendly and easy to use way; it’s not intimidating and is a great way to start building your family tree as it really does manage to draw you in. You will find that you will soon become addicted to building your family tree which will make constructing it much easier.
How does the registration process work?
Registering for an account is pretty much like any other site; you need to enter your email address, password, name, gender, display name, date of birth, and country. You will also need to tick the box at the bottom of the form to accept the terms and conditions. You need to use a real email address as this will be how you log into your account.
What does it cost to use the application?
MyHeritage is completely free for all users; there are no noticeable adverts anywhere on the site.
Who would you recommend the application to?
MyHeritage is a fantastic system for anyone trying to research their family tree and keep in contact with members that they already know about. The photo sharing application makes it really easy to share photos with the whole family at once. It also features advanced face recognition software which makes it really easy to find out which people are actually in the photos.

Gedcom files are text only, but when I imported this file from the Geni.com site the pictures I had were included into the Myheritage site. Media files are separate and have to have a path for the application to find them. Now how did Myheritage know where the path was for the pictures? unless they are on the same servers and run by the same people.

The "free" version is just partly true, as in most cases. According to http://www.myheritage.com/family-pages the service becomes non free when "But if you want to supercharge your site with more storage, more members, larger family trees and more features, go premium with our Premium or PremiumPlus plans." When I used to site the limit for a free tree site was 1000 profiles (nowadays only 250 profiles) , which is way too small for my purposes (+90000 profiles), and I hit the limit within weeks. See subcription plan at http://www.myheritage.com/subscription-plans . On-line collaboration features are totally missing. The off-line tree builder is neat.
