My Yahoo! is a customizable internet start page.
My Yahoo! was one of the first customizable internet start pages when it was launched by Yahoo over 10 years ago. Over the years it has continually added new features. You can fully customize your start page to display your local weather, your stock portfolio and your choice of news subjects. You can also add an RSS-feed, which will allow you to quickly view the headlines from your favorite news sources or blogs. My Yahoo! also integrates Yahoo! mail into the start page, so if you use Yahoo! mail, you will immediately be able to see if you have any new messages every time you view your browser’s home page. Obviously this is not a good idea if many people use your computer, as they will be able to send and receive e-mails in your name! But if you are using a personal or family computer then this might be less of a concern.
My Yahoo’s main competitor is iGoogle, a recent arrival to the market. Both make use of advanced Web 2.0 code, enabling you to drag and drop modules around a page at will. The main difference between the two is that the default integrated search engine in iGoogle is Google itself, which is many times superior to Yahoo’s own search engine.
My Yahoo! uses a very modern look and feel, and you can choose between multiple themed color schemes for your page, with some using simple colors, while others use advanced textures and background patterns. The layout scales well to your screen size, although it can sometimes feel a bit cluttered. You are free to get rid of some modules however to free up space on the page.
In order to use My Yahoo, you must first register for a Yahoo! ID. Many people will already have a Yahoo! ID, so for many people this will not be a process they will have to go through. However, if you do wish to register, you may have difficulty finding a username which isn’t already taken. Yahoo has existed for almost 15 years and has millions of users, and trying to find a free username that’s also easy to remember can be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
My Yahoo! is a free service funded by advertising. However, the advertising used is based on graphical ads and banners, which can be distracting on the eye, especially when compared to textual ads.
My Yahoo! is a complete service, especially if you use Yahoo! Mail, as it gives you the ability to use your Yahoo mailbox. However, it is let down somewhat by the use of some distractive advertising and the inferior Yahoo search engine.
