Moshi Monsters

Ratingstars4 Rated 4 out of 5 stars by AppAppeal Editor
What can you use the application for?
Moshi Monsters is a game for Children, it’s sort of like those virtual pets that you used to have, only on the internet and they can actually do things. Moshi Monsters live in a virtual world that exists on your computer, there are lots of different monsters and children can choose one that they want to adopt. This monster then becomes their pet. All of the monsters live in Monstro city; here children can build a home for their pet. Users can also play games with one another, meet other people and show their pet to people. It’s like a tamogotchi only with social networking and doesn’t just beep at you all the time. Moshi Monsters has been created with the intention of being a fun and safe environment for children to play in. Not only that but it’s also an educational game that’s great fun for any age child. A child who visits the site can adopt a monster; they can give it a cute name and even design the colors of the monster. Every monster is different and has a different personality, the more you play with the monster, the more the personality will develop. Competing and solving puzzles means that you win money, the currency of the game is Rox. You can then use Rox to buy things from the virtual shop. There are various social networking features including blogs, and pin boards.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
Moshi Monsters was created by Mind Candy, a company specializing in producing new multi player and online games. The company was founded in 2003 by Michael Smith and is based in London. Michael Smith was one of the founders of Firebox.com when he was in his early 20’s; firebox is now an extremely popular online retailer.
What are the differences to other applications?
Moshi Monsters is a game that’s designed specifically for children. It’s a safe environment where they can go to meet people that they know safely. Unlike many other video games that concentrate on violence and gore, this one is just for kids. Monsters can be adopted and cared for just like any other virtual pet. The social networking functions make this site much more interesting to use, and the graphics are great.
How does the application look and feel to use?
The application is designed just for children and so is very easy to use. The colors and designs used are very attractive and make playing the game even more enjoyable. There are also tutorial sections which are designed to help you understand how you should play the game.
How does the registration process work?
If you want to register for an account on Moshi Monsters and you are under the age of 16 then you will first need your parents consent. It’s slightly harder to register an account on Moshi Monsters than other sites; if you click the big “Join now” button then you will be taken to a price list. The free version can be signed up to by clicking the small link at the top of that membership page saying the free version is available here. The first step of the free registration is to select the monster that you want to adopt. You can then design the colors of the monster. The whole signup process is very easy and designed so that it’s fun and easy for kids to do too. You have to agree to the rules, and then give your monster a name. The adoption papers are the actual sign up form, you need to fill out your name, password and your parents email address. When you enter a name this is actually the username and must be unique, so just putting your first name probably won’t work. If you’re under 13 then you will need to enter your parents email address, otherwise you can enter your own. Clicking adopt will create your own virtual pet. You then have to check your email address and click the link to activate your account.
What does it cost to use the application?
There are free membership plans to Moshi Monsters, or you can pay. Paying gets you more features although it doesn't seem to say anywhere what these extra features are.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Moshi Monsters is ideal for kids, or big kids that are young at heart!
  • Adopt your very own monster
  • Name your monster and take care of it
  • Social networking functions including blogs and pin boards
  • Play games and earn Rox (virtual money)

Yeah, after my credit card was stolen, I found out I had to go to Click and buy to update it. After I did, my membership was never turned back on. Click and Buy says they do not accept "gift cards". My card happens to be a debit card, the same card (different #'s) used to set up the account. I don't know what made it become a "gift card". So now my son is no longer a member after he collected 7 moshlings so far. I would love to find a game like this that doesn't do business with a payment company like Click and Buy.

We were introduced to this by friends. Their daughter plays on it and it looked fun, but tonight I noticed that our daugher had "strangers" in her friends box and they had not been invited by her. Their "houses" were crowded, dark and untidy and their messages not age appropriate. I further discovered that if you click into your "friend's" friends box, you can click on those friends in turn and discover their friends down the chain - OK 7 or 8 year olds might not think to do this but pre-teens and teens could access lots of "friends" that way. It is no way safe and I will exercise parental control and find a more suitable games site for my child. We are not members yet and will not become members either.

I don't think that it is fair for parents to have to pay for their child to be a moshi monster member. I myself have a moshi monster my mother, and my sister when we logged on one day, and saw all the new features we thought we could go on. We were disappointed to find that we had to pay a certain amount for a certain number of months. I think this is a website for kids and their parents shouldn't have to pay for their children to play a nice game on the computer. I understand that the children can still play on moshi monster, but we are limited of things to do. Even the little expensive store we use to have and could go in, we can't go there anymore. I don't think any child should feel like they're limited to fun, because thats exactly how I feel.

Moshi monsters is good, but you get bored really easy and being a member myself, i dont think you should have to pay for it. The things in the stores are cool but if you have done the daily challenge already and you want to buy something, it goes before you get all the rox you need as you only get 5 rox for doing 1 challenge from the hall of puzzles. I love the fact you can have friends and send messages! Also getting moshings is really cool because sometimes you dont know what they are going to turn out as.

My seven year old loves this game, but I HIGHLY resent the fact that money is required to become a "moshi member" ... why on earth is everyone so greedy, it costs money to BREATHE these days.

We tried to pay for this but click and buy want credit cad details, passport, utility bills, drivers license, mother's maiden name etc. This is WAY too much info for what we want to be a simple transaction. Kids love this game but no way I'm giving this info to Click & Buy!!

doesn't anyone moderate this site? I guess not huh? I see a child has posted their email address here, publicly, and it seems no-one thinks this is inappropriate and should be removed.

Yeah I agree. Why should ppl put thier email address on a public site??? I think moshi monsters is a great site but maybe they shouldn't use this click nd Buy thing.

My seven year old plays moshi monsters. I get on and check her friends. She is not a member. I don't mind paying the 50 bucks ( i gave miley 30 bucks... and i regret that) for the member ship but I'M NOT GOING TO GIVE CLICK AND BUY ALL THAT INFO. They need to get moshi gift cars here in the U.S. I think this app is great.

Come on people, it costs money to develop the site. If you want your kid to play in the park, you pay your taxes. If you want your kid to play online, you pay a fee to the developer. I am not related in any way to the developers or owners of that site, but I do work in the online software as a service industry, so I know what it feels like when people expect to get something for nothing.

Moshi Monsters is great I think!!! I am a young mother (22) but VERY responsible for my children! I have 2 kids. A 2 moth year old boy. & a 7 year old girl. She plays on Moshi Monsters. But, this 56 year old MAN wanted to add her! I said "NO WAY!" So now i watch over her shoulder while shes playing & check her: Friend, Messages and such.

I like the Moshi Monster website! My 8 and 7 year old sons and I play it everyday. I keep an eye on their friends and messages and haven't had any trouble. I would like to get them memberships as a gift but cannot get gift cards in the US and I am not an internet shopper; I just don't like to. Any chance the gift cards are coming available in the US? I don't mind paying the developers for a great job done!

Its's stupid you must enter your age and enter your parents email instead of yours. I am a child under sixteen who wants to join Moshi Monsters and must keep their age secret. Please could someone stop this nonsense! It's limiting - or you could say STOPPING - the fun. At least it is for me and maybe many other kids, who just keep quiet about it. I rate Moshi gameplay 5 out of 5 stars and rules zero out of 5 stars. That is all I have to say bye.
