What can you use the app for?
Mixx allows users to increase the exposure of their content. The application integrates easily into an existing website. Through Mixx, users can spread information and content and encourage their audience to pass it on to others in their social network. Mixx generates a custom website for users that is populated with items that Mixx feels the user will find interesting. Along with intriguing articles and content, Mixx also includes images and photographs from all corners of the internet.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
Mixx was conceived by founder Chris McGill and launched in May of 2007. It was billed as a social network and media sharing application. The site is currently based out of McLean, Virginia and still offers users many of the same functionalities with a few updates. Today, many users can turn to Mixx as an easy way to find popular news articles and relevant stories based on their personal preferences and interests.
What are the differences to other apps?
The service offered by Mixx is not terribly unique. Some elements are considered very similar to Digg. The difference is that Mixx provides a more tailored niche that provides content from other resources, including a few lesser known options. Users can review text content, photos, and video then bookmark them for reference later. Mixx also welcomes the participation of online publishers so that they can all benefit by providing users with a diverse selection of content to stay informed. Mixx Channels seems to be helping further the publisher’s ability to get users to read through multiple items.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
The Mixx website offers a light blue and white color scheme highlighted by the bold, colorful Mixx logo. Overall, the site is well organized and neat. There is minimal clutter and users can quickly navigate to the various tools offered by Mixx. Popular news articles and stories are also included on the homepage so new visitors can check out recent events and locate something they find engaging.
How does the registration process work?
The registration link is not readily apparent. New user must scroll down and look along the right hand column under the login menu. A red “Not a Member? Join here!” link takes new users to the registration form. Mixx offers many ways to create an account. Users can sign in through an existing AOL, Yahoo, Google, Facebook or OpenID account. A traditional registration form is also available below, and requires an email address, password, and Captcha code verification. After submitting the information, the user can begin choosing a Mixx username, but they are advised that a verification email has been sent and must be accessed to complete registration.
What does it cost to use the application?
Mixx benefits from having more users review content. That being said, anyone can create an account for free. No cost membership is very important to encourage visitors to return and pass content on to others. The site has made a good choice in allowing anyone to become a member. There is currently no premium paid account and no indication that this will change in the near future.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Mixx is a good choice for anyone who enjoys reading information on the internet. By listing popular news stories and relevant articles, Mixx allows users to get a glimpse into current events and items that they may find interesting. Although the site may not offer actual research resources, it is a way to comb the internet for items that the user may need or want to read.
