MediaFire

What can you use the application for?
MediaFire is a file sending and hosting application. You can use it to send files to friends and to store files online.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
MediaFire launched around October 2006 and is currently one of the most popular websites around. Little is known about the company, perhaps they want to keep a low profile since some illegal content is shared through their application.
What are the differences to other applications?
The major difference of MediaFire compared to other file send applications is the focus on file sharing. After you upload a file, unlimited downloads are possible. But the nature of the site also means that files are much more public than you might want them to be. It requires an extra click to mark a file as private.
How does the application look and feel to use?
MediaFire has a responsive interface and a clear layout. Their upload screen is very visual and displays all the information you might want to know. One thing to pay attention to is that their upload speed is in bits while their upload status is in bytes.
How does the registration process work?
No registration is required to send a file, but you will need one to manage your files. It is a good idea to register if you want to set the profile of your files to private instead of the public default. Registration only requires an email address and password. After registration you can turn off the default newsletter in your preferences.
What does it cost to use the application?
MediaFire has advertisements on the website. They don't have any paid versions.
Who would you recommend the application to?
We recommend MediaFire only to people who want to share generic files with their friends. Don't send anything with this application that you don't want the world to see because by default all you uploads are set for public viewing.

I have been able to use this service for more than a year now and I used to be pretty happy with it. MediaFire comes along in a pretty packaging and will offer you with a free account and unlimited storage space for files to share with your friends and family. There have been minor issues with the Flash Interface on slower machines (3yr old PC laptop and Mac) when file uploads were cancelled (at 95% or similar) and download previews were not supported. The down side of MediaFire, however, is that they will delete your files from your account without informing you if you have not logged in for 30 days or uploaded and downloaded any files in the same time. This comes very unhandy if you go on a longer holiday or just not use the service for a while and have to re-upload everything again. This is the case for the Free accounts and it is deeply upsetting if you experience it. You will not be able to retrieve these files from the MediaFire servers, they will be deleted. Contacting customer service is pointless, they will just tell you about rules you have never read on their website (unless you specifically dig for "Where are all my files gone" in the "Knowledgebase"), and which they keep from you until you specifically ask to know about them. I suppose you should not expect anything, if you don't pay anything but it would at least be helpful if MediaFire would notify you if your files are expiring, but they will fail to do so and you will loose your files and - more importantly - have to upload things you have shared with your pals, all over again. I would also like to write about the manner the customer service dealt with my complaint but I fear my words could be upsetting for the younger generation reading this review. To put it nicely: They didn't deal with it very well. And I am now using Dropbox, which is much neater and simpler.

This used to be a good service but now be sure you stay away! I LOST ALL OF MY PICTURES due to inactivity. you must log on at least every 30 days or they will delete everything without any warning. See the previous persons comments as they are more detailed to the problem.

The Mediafire hosting site is UNRELIABLE. When it is up and running, it works very well. But since I've purchased a one year 'membership', the site has been down about 40% of the time. And trust me, my users are nor happy about that! When my year expires, I'm going to find a more reliable service. Until then, I am setting up several 'mirror' sites on other hosting services. Mediafire is NOT RECOMMENDED. Big Daddy Jim
