What can you use the app for?

Map My Run is the ultimate mapping resource for runners. The site is designed to help users’ live active, healthy lifestyles by finding the perfect running routes. Rather than focusing on building a route based on one type of map, users can choose routes based on a variety of maps. Topographical maps allow users to factor terrain and landscape into the mix while elevation view features allow users to factor height into the mix. Street level view maps take runners through urban sprawls. Using Map My Run, athletes can effectively build the perfect running routes without spending too much time researching the area. Map My Run provides all the tools to consider every aspect of the journey.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Map My Run is a part of Map My Fitness, which was founded in 2006 by Kevin Callahan and Robin Thurston. Based out of Denver, Colorado, the team currently includes over 20 employees. The creators wanted to find better ways for users to become a part of an online fitness community and find the tools necessary to improve their ability to get and stay healthy. Today, the Map My Fitness family of online applications and sites assists more than 2,400,000 registered users who enjoy hiking, bicycling, walking, running, and many other physical activities.

What are the differences to other apps?

There are numerous health related websites out there. Map My Run takes one specific aspect of being fit and enhances it. Users can create a customized running, jogging, cycling, or hiking path using the many maps offered by Map My Run. The site looks further into the task going beyond simple mile counts to consider elevation, topography and city landscapes. Anyone can build a customized exercise trail that is suited to their preferences and local area. The user can travel the path prepared for any elevations or obstacles that could alter difficulty levels as well.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The Map My Run website comes across as a little busy at first. There are a few third party advertisements, most of which seem to be geared towards a general audience rather than the group that might be checking out Map My Run. Although these add to the clutter found on the site, it is well organized for the most part. Navigation links across the top of the page help users find the tools and resources they need. The maps are from Google, so they are for the most part accurate and easy to read.

How does the registration process work?

New users can join Map My Run by clicking on the orange “Become a Member” button at the top right hand corner of the homepage. The user must choose from four membership levels by clicking the corresponding colored button. The Map My Run registration form requires a first name, last name, email address, password, desired username, and date of birth. The user is also asked to enter their health stats, including height, weight, resting heart rate and location details.

Map My Run offers users four memberships to choose from. The first is the free membership. Users can access workouts and previously recorded data as well as three months of workout reports, unlimited run mapping, elevation charts, gear tracker, challenges and goals, and leaderboards. The Bronze membership runs about $6 per month and upgrades to include one year of workout history, three free printed maps per month, and one free signature training plan per month. I'm looking to buy a GPS watch, and then saw the iMapmyRun app. Does the data collected on an Android phone sync with the mapmyrun website?

Another great aspect of this site is the ability to log your routes, workouts, and your vitals such as Heart rate and calories burned... scheduling and tracking your achievements. Your routes, workouts, and achievements can then be shared with your friends on MapMyRun.com's fast growing social community

Thanks for the review of our product. I wanted to mention that the new website, currently located at beta.mapmyrun.com offers a much friendlier and cleaner user interface. We also happy to announce that the iMapMyRUN application will also track your stride and heart rate. (additional equiptment required) Cheers, Chris Carter MapMyFITNESS Community Manager
