What can you use the app for?
LiveMocha is an online application which makes it possible for users to learn new languages. They can subscribe and complete courses in a number of different languages including English, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, French and German. There are a number of different levels of course including beginner and advanced courses. There are also plenty of opportunities to practice your language skills with other users by using speech or text chats on the site. This also makes it possible to find native speakers to tutor and help you learn the language.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
LiveMocha was founded on 24th September 2007 and is a popular free language learning site. A competitor is italki which is a Chinese based site with similar features.
What are the differences to other apps?
Unlike many other applications LiveMocha is completely free to use it also offers more languages than some competing sites. An interesting addition is Chinese which will soon become a very important language in the world.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
The application has quite a nice design, it’s very easy to use and it will be personalized for you when you register for an account. It’s much more fun to use then a book or even a CD ROM, all of the material is very engaging which will make sure that you don’t get bored or consider giving up. Learning a language will still be a lot of hard work but it does make things much easier. As long as you are determined and ready to put in lots of effort you shouldn’t have a problem. The ability to practice talking with native speakers and other students is also very beneficial and will make sure that you not only learn the basics but can also use them in conversations.
How does the registration process work?
Registering for an account is necessary if you want to start learning a language; this doesn’t take very long and is pretty simple. You first need to choose the language that you speak now and the language that you want to learn. Then you need to fill out the registration form which is pretty basic, once you have registered you will then be sent an email. You need to click the link inside the email message to activate your account and confirm your address. Once you have activated your account you can then log in and start learning a language.
What does it cost to use the application?
LiveMocha is completely free; all of the language courses are free and quite useful. The site is supported by adverts but these don’t seem to get in the way or make the experience any less enjoyable.
Who would you recommend the application to?
LiveMocha is useful for anyone wanting to learn a language. It’s perfect for business users or people going on holiday. It’s also ideal for immigrants looking for work in a foreign country who first want to learn or improve their communication skills. For anyone to be part of a community it is important that they can communicate, this could be the answer that you are looking for.

I bought the French online course,(English version) which is a huge disappointment. It is not written in English; it is American. I translated the French to understand the English! I expect a French course for an ENGLISH market to at least use proper English Grammar, which the American version fails to do. There are a few phrases that might be useful, but not worth the price.

There a lot of mistakes in the learning material. I submitted a written exercise which, after I submitted it, I discovered had given me insufficient information on how to conjugate the verbs I was using in the exercise. Information in their exercises is often wrong or insufficent. Also, anyone can correct exercises you do on the site. You need to take the help you receive with a big grain of salt. All this being said, it's a great place to meet language learners to communicate with.

Live Mocha is a great idea (even if it's a knockoff of Rosetta), but the execution is poor. There are many mistakes and inconsistancies
