LibraryThing is an online application which can be used to catalog your book collection. This website makes it easy for you to access your book catalog from anywhere in the world, which is ideal if you ever want to find out which books you’ve read and which ones you still don’t have. You can even access your catalog from your mobile phone which makes it very easy to find out everything you need to know. Everybody catalogs their books on the same system which makes the site a social networking platform which is capable of putting people in touch with other people that read similar books and so share similar interests. LibraryThing is a very powerful application that’s capable of searching the database of Amazon websites, 80 libraries throughout the world and the library of congress. It’s also possible to edit information, and tag certain books so that other people can find them easily in the future. Books can be sorted using either the Dewey System or the Library of Congress system depending on what you prefer. LibraryThing combines books and social networking in one easy package, you can easily flick through other peoples catalogs and find out information about which books you might like to read in the future. Authors, Publishers and book readers can all use librarything. Authors all have their own pages automatically. This is automatically generated when a book created by a new author is added to the system. Anyone can enter information and add photos; you might like to make it look pretty now. LibraryThing allows you to talk to their readers personally which are something that you wouldn’t normally be able to do.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
LibraryThing was launched to the public in May 2006 by Tim Spalding. Tim’s a budding webpreneur and already has a number of websites including bramblestory and ancientlibrary. According to the CrunchBase website LibraryThing now employs 10 people.
What are the differences to other apps?
Although many people have compared this to one of the many other social networking sites this one is slightly different. It allows people to share their opinions about certain books which makes it easy to find people with similar interests as yourself. Unlike some of the other applications you don’t need to download any plugins to use the site, and there is a free or paid version depending on how many books you want to add. LibraryThing searches through the Library Congress database, along with Amazon, and numerous libraries all around the world.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
Using LibraryThing is really easy, the layout and design of the site is very attractive. The clean design makes it particularly easy to find your way around. Adding books and various other functions are very easy as it’s simply a matter of clicking a few links and following instructions on the screen. Being guided through everything makes it very easy to understand.
How does the registration process work?
Setting up an account is really easy, you just need to choose a username and enter a password. If you don’t want other people to see the books you have then you can create a private account so your book catalog remains hidden for other people.
What does it cost to use the application?
There are two different types of accounts; a free account is a basic account which allows you to add up to 200 books to your catalog. This should be enough for most people, although if you want more then you can consider a paid personal account. These paid accounts cost $10 per year, or a one off payment of $25 for a lifetime membership. There are also lots of other types of accounts for organizations.

LibraryThing is an ideal application which makes it really to manage your book catalog online. You can also access this catalog from all over the world which is a great way to make sure you never end up buying books that you already have. The social networking part of the site also allows you to meet and share reviews about certain books in your catalog. This is ideal for any book lover that wants to get the most out of their hobby as possible.
