What can you use the app for?

Kicksend gives users a quick, painless way to share files online. The three step process begins with opening the application, entering an email address then dragging and dropping the file to be sent. The user can send files to any email address. The recipient does not have to have a Kicksend account to receive them. Users can also send files to more than one person by adding each before sending the file. The desktop app lets users send larger files as well as batches of files. Kicksend automatically downloads files as they are received and sorts them for the user. The user can also send comments or hold a discussion about a file in real time through the application. Additional features include detailed stats that show file downloads and other information as well as delivery notifications.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Kicksend was founded in March of 2011 by Pradeep Elankumaran and Brendan Lim. Overall, Kicksend has been received with enthusiasm by most users. The application offers a convenient way to share file of various sizes to multiple people without too much hassle. Although the subscription plans are relatively inexpensive, most users comment that the only downside is that the average person will probably not need most of the features on a daily basis (unless they do an unusually high amount of file sending, of course).

What are the differences to other apps?

Kicksend is a more appealing option compared to many file sending applications because of its simplicity and convenience. The application works more like Dropbox in the way the user drags and drops files onto the sending area. Unlike Dropbox, the file is actually sent to the recipient’s email. The recipient does not have to have a Kicksend account to receive and open files sent by users. The drag and drop interface adds a nice touch to the user friendly nature of the application.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

Kicksend is very clean and well organized. Users can easily mater its interface, even those who are not familiar with the way applications like this usually work. The simple menus include light blue backgrounds that add a little diversity without over doing it. It takes minimal keystrokes to prepare and send a file to anyone (even those who are not Kicksend users). The application’s flexibility and convenience stems primarily from its hassle-free interface.

How does the registration process work?

New users can sign up by clicking the “Start Sending Files” button found along the left hand side of the Kicksend homepage. A small round Facebook button is also available below for users who prefer to sign in with an existing Facebook account. The next page asks the user to provide a full name, email address and password. The user is automatically logged in and provided a list of five optional steps that they can complete to earn more free storage space. These include items like Tweeting about Kicksend, liking Kicksend on Facebook and inviting three friends to sign up.

What does it cost to use the application?

All new users are given access to a free Kicksend account. The user can download the desktop application or work online for free. The desktop version allows the user to send files that are larger than 150 MBs. The application does not mention a subscription or paid membership option, although third party resources note a tiered subscription plan for the application. The free stores files on Kicksend’s secure server for two weeks.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Kicksend is a helpful application for anyone who has to send a file. Even if the user only sends one or two files every now and again, they can do so quickly and painlessly with Kicksend. The application is very easy to use and gives the user a desktop and web based option. Serious users may wish to download the desktop version to increase file size capabilities and allow automatic file downloading.
