Imeem is a social network site where users can upload and share online media, such as video, music and photos.
Imeem was launched in 2004, well before the likes of Youtube and Google Video, and has since grown into one of the largest online media-sharing sites on the internet. It claims to be the largest social music network site on the internet.
Imeem, while having less overall content than Youtube and Google Video, concentrates more on the community and organisational aspect of the media sharing. Users can browse music by genre, and view charts of the most viewed or most up and coming clips within that genre. You can also join a group containing fans of a certain group or genre, where you can share media or be recommended other media to search for.
The Imeem website uses a clean, modern look and feel that is easy to navigate. Unfortunately, this is spoiled by the presence of large, invasive flashing banner ads. If you find that these bother you, you may be impeded while using the site. The interface for uploading media is a snap, although you will need to make sure you have a Flash plugin installed. It is also possible to upload multiple files at once, allowing you to specify a batch of files to be uploaded, leaving you free to concentrate on something else while the files are consecutively uploaded in the background.
Registration is not required if you only wish to browse the site and view the media. However, if you want to upload and share your own media, create your own homepage and/or join groups, you will be required to enter and verify your e-mail, as well as provide your full date of birth.
Imeem is a free service, supported by advertising.
If you want to browse a collection of music, videos and photos that is well organised, and you are less concerned with the amount of media available, then Imeem is the service for you.
