What can you use the application for?
HowCast is a video sharing site similar to YouTube however it is slightly different as it offers educational how to type videos. These videos can be used to show you how to do pretty much anything you want. It was founded by a group of ex Google and YouTube employees.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
HowCast was launched in February 2008 by three ex Google employees who previously worked on You Tube and Google Video. The three founders of howcast are Sanjay Raman, Daniel Blackman, and Jason Liebman.
What are the differences to other applications?
There are plenty of video sharing websites on the internet however howcast is a little different. Instead of going for a large number of videos on their site they are much more interested in the quality of the uploaded content. They are trying to make web videos informative rather than just entertaining. HowCast contains hundreds of videos which can be used to see how to do various tasks.
How does the application look and feel to use?
HowCast has a very nice bright and airy feel to it. It’s a real pleasure to use with popular and new videos being displayed on the home page. You can also search for how to videos depending on what it is you are trying to do. You can then view any video you want by clicking on it. It’s very similar to any other video sharing site and won’t take you long to get used to.
How does the registration process work?
If you have a face book account then you can log in without registering for an account. You can also view videos without having to log in. However if you want to leave comments or submit your own videos then you will need to register. Registration is very easy and is simply a matter of filling out a very short form. You might want to uncheck the option to receive the weekly email, but you will have to accept the terms. Also be careful if you make any errors because it automatically re-checks the daily email list. An email address is required but it is not checked and you are logged straight into your account.
What does it cost to use the application?
HowCast like many other video sharing applications is free for everyone to use. It is supported by adverts although these aren’t really a problem and don’t get in the way of the videos. There aren’t any adverts in the videos, which is a nice touch.
Who would you recommend the application to?
HowCast is a slightly more polished and refined version of YouTube aimed at people looking how to do certain tasks. If you are trying to do something for the first time then HowCast is perfect. It’s suitable for everyone as it has hundreds of videos on all kinds of different subjects.
  • Search for videos which show you how to do a variety of different things. These emails are much more professional than other video sharing websites and also particularly useful.
  • The community can rate videos and report any that are either against the terms of the site or simply not useful. The idea of this is that only useful and valuable videos will remain on the website.
  • When you log into your account you can add videos to your favorite list which will make it really easy to find it again if you find it useful. You can also leave comments on videos to help other people or suggest differences.
  • If you think you can do a better job and want to make your own how to video then you might want to submit your own videos. Submitting your own how to videos to howcast is very easy once you are signed into your account.
