Hotelicopter is an online hotel review website which also incorporates social networking features which make it possible for people to find the right hotel based not only on price, but by also reading about peoples own experiences. The site manages to combine reviews, social networking and a very clever search tool to make finding a hotel easier than normal. The search engine makes it possible to search for over 100,000 hotels all over the world to check for availability and pricing. When searching users can select what they want from their ideal hotel, reviews written by TripAdvisor members are then also used to work out which hotels would be best suited to them. The results page has a map, reviews, location, ratings and of course prices. Users of the site can also write reviews and participate in the community by chatting in forums. They also promise to reply to every email personally.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Hotelicopter was launched in July 2007 and was originally known as Vibe Agent. It changed its name and reframed itself as Hotelicopter in early 2009. The company is based in Virginia. Competitors of Hotelicopter include TripAdvisor, TripUp and Kayak.

What are the differences to other apps?

Unlike other applications this one has a very nice search feature, not only does it search for hotels based on your desired location it will also present hotels that might be suitable for you. It combines information about these hotels with reviews which will make it possible to identify hotels that are like ones that you are looking for.

The site itself has a nice clean design and looks very similar to any other hotel review site. It does however have the nice Meta search feature which makes it possible to find hotels that are not only within budget but also desirable based on your personal preferences. It’s also easy to refine your search results based on a number of different criteria.

How does the registration process work?

You cannot register for an account with the site; they use a Facebook login system. This means that you either need to log in using your Facebook account or sign up for one. This makes it possible to invite your contacts to use the site without having to enter them manually.

What does it cost to use the application?

Hotelicopter is free for basic users; they make money through advertising and presumably through their hotelier package. They may also make money from commission if someone actually goes on to book a hotel room through their site.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Hotelicopter is easy to check hotel rooms all around the world. It makes it possible to find a hotel by selecting certain desirable criteria. They also link to Tripadvisor reviews which makes choosing the best hotel for you easier than it would be otherwise. The site looks great and is fast but is not really different from any other hotel search site.
