GTrot gives users a fun way to plan and share trips. Users can create a new trip and save old trips to their GTrot account. These trips can be easily shared with others through the user’s GTrot space. The user can instantly add more trips by forwarding their flight or hotel itinerary to the email address provided by GTrot. Users can discover friends that are currently residing in their destination and read through advice given by people they trust. GTrot also allows users to see where their friends have been, where they are currently and where they plan to go in the future. GTrot also lists promotions and deals that are available at the user’s destination to help users save money as they travel. These include deals from hundreds of websites including Groupon. GTrot provides a social way for users to plan and record their trips. In November 2011, GTrot changed their approach to a more city-based one.
GTrot was founded by Brittany Laughlin and Zach Smith in February of 2009. The application was intended to provide a social travel tool to internet users. The company remains small with fewer than 10 individuals located in Chicago, Illinois.
GTrot allows users to create their travel plans and easily share them with others. The site provides any ways to learn about destinations and discover potential deals that could help the user travel more cheaply. The site also includes an instant add feature that enables users to email their itinerary to GTrot to automatically add the information to their account without logging in.
GTrot has a fun, light hearted color scheme that gives off an overall friendly vibe to new visitors. The stylish GTrot logo features a pair of footprints and a thick red outline. The homepage uses a pleasantly textured blue header with screen shots and additional information just below. The user’s GTrot profile page is set up much like social networking pages, with all the information neatly arranged into its own area. A list of avatars is included to allow the user to see which friends live in or have been to the places they plan to visit.
GTrot works much like a social network, so an account is required. At this time, no traditional account creation option is available. All users who would like to register for GTrot can do so by providing their Facebook credentials. The user can click either the blue and white “Log in with Facebook” button in the upper, right hand corner or the larger matching button near the center of the homepage. A pop up box will appear asking the user to log in to Facebook and allow GTrot to access their account.
GTrot provides a fun way to plan a trip. The site relies heavily on user participation, so requiring a fee would not be a good choice for the application. GTrot is currently priced right where it should be: free. Users can gain a great deal of insight into an area, however all of that insight is provided by other users. The free account encourages more users to participate and share their knowledge of various locations.
GTrot is a great tool for anyone who has, is or will be traveling. Experienced travellers can share their knowledge while others can learn what to expect and obtain advice before they leave. The site gives users many ways to interact and learn about a destination before they get there.
