What can you use the app for?

GrubHub is designed to help users find all the restaurants in their area that deliver to them. The application is currently available for 13 cities, including Boston, Chicago, Denver, Boulder, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, Oakland, San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Users can place online orders through GrubHub and discover which restaurants are available based on location and keyword (which could be cuisine, a restaurant name or other food related keyword). The site also gives users an account option which will log their past orders and favorite eateries. Users can post reviews which they can later access to remember which restaurants they liked and which were not so great. An iPhone app version is also available.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

GrubHub was created in 2004 by Matt Maloney and Michael Evans. The company currently employs nearly 100 individuals, including east coast sales manager Phillip Edwards, Vice President of Business Development Steve Sanger and chairman Chuck Templeton. The site was intended to provide users with an easy online ordering option for food delivery. In September 2011, GrubHub raised $50 million in its E series of funding, bringing its total capital to $84 million. The company has also acquired Dotmenu, the company that owns Campusfood and Allmenus.

What are the differences to other apps?

GrubHub helps users find restaurants who offer delivery to them. Most restaurant related websites help users locate all eateries in their area. GrubHub actually allows the user to place orders through the website. Past orders are also saved so the user can access them later as well as reviews and the user’s favorite restaurants.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The GrubHub website has a very fun, modern design. The color scheme features a deep red and white with a softly textured header and pale background. Stylish outlines of various food items, such as pizza, salads, fish and sushi grace the background just under the header. The search tool bar is prominently displayed at the top of the page. Overall GrubHub is very easy to navigate has a rich design that adds personality to the service offered by the website.

How does the registration process work?

New users can sign up for a GrubHub account by clicking the red underlined “Create Your Account” link in the upper, right hand corner of the page. A blue Facebook logo button is also available for users who prefer to sign in that way. The registration form requires a first and last name, address, city, state, zip code and phone number. Users can also add an apartment or unit number as well as cross street information. The bottom of the form asks the user for an email address, password and display name (which is seen when the user posts reviews). A large text box at the bottom of the form asks the user for any special instructions which will be added to each food order they submit through GrubHub. A check box is also available that allows the user to request that no plastic ware or napkins be sent to reduce waste.

What does it cost to use the application?

GrubHub invites anyone to sign up and use the service for free. There are no subscription fees or transactions fees for online food orders. Users are given access to all current features. No premium membership currently exists. Both phone and online orders are free (the user only pays whatever the cost of their food and delivery is through the restaurant they are ordering from). The site also offers coupons to users, so there may be ways to save money when ordering through GrubHub.

Who would you recommend the application to?

GrubHub is a great tool for anyone who frequently orders food in their community. It is really only helpful to those in the 13 cities in the United States that currently make up the website’s service area. This will most likely grow in time, but for now it is restricted to users in these areas.
