What can you use the application for?
Gmail is an online email application which enables you to receive and send mail from a webpage. You have unlimited storage space and never have to worry about backups. You can access your email from any computer. Spam is almost nonexistent on Gmail.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
Gmail was launched on April 1, 2004. Because it was April fools day and Google offered a 1GB storage limit many people initially thought Gmail was a joke. But since then, Gmail has taken the email market by storm. Since February 2007 registration is open to everyone.
What are the differences to other applications?
Gmail is the most user oriented email application around. It has enormous storage space, almost no spam and a quick interface. No banner ads or homepages get in the way of browsing your email, anywhere, anyplace.
How does the application look and feel to use?
The Gmail look is about showing the content. Almost all screen real estate is dedicated to your messages. Virtually all functions are one click away. It isn't the prettiest site in the world but it sure works.
How does the registration process work?
Since Februari 2007 an invitation is no longer necessary and anyone can register. You need to get a Google Account. This requires not much more than a name and a password. If you give an alternative email address you can get password reminders. Any invitations emailed to that address will appear on Google Calendar.
What does it cost to use the application?
Gmail is free and is supported with text ads. These text ads appear above your email messages. They are relevant to the email you read. Google says that advertisers don't have access to the emails themselves and your privacy is guaranteed. If you need more storage space than the ample amount you get for free you can buy more, 10GB is 20 USD, 40GB is 75USD, 150GB is 250 USD, and 400GB is 500 US Dollars per year.
Who would you recommend the application to?
