What can you use the app for?
Gliffy is a very useful online application which has been designed to make designing floor plans, diagrams and flowcharts as easy as possible. It’s also possible to create technical drawings with the same application. It’s been designed with the intention of making it easier to tell people what you want because you can show them a picture. Gliffy makes it easier to communicate and make decisions.
Thousands of people have used Gliffy to create diagrams for a wide range of applications including industry and small business owners. Some multinational businesses are also using Gliffy.
As this is a web based application it is platform independent meaning that it can be accessed on a Mac, pc or even in Linux. This is a huge plus in a world where windows isn’t always on top.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
Gliffy was founded in May 2005 by Clint Dickson and Chris Kohlhardt in San Francisco, it currently has 2 employees. It has been around for a long time and received mainly positive reviews from everyone that has reviewed it. It’s a very popular application and has been called a Visio killer in the past!
What are the differences to other apps?
Unlike many other applications Gliffy has been around for a very long time, it also offers some very advanced features and the ability to design floor plans will be very useful for lots of people and businesses.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
Using Gliffy is very easy considering how complicated the subject is. You use this just like a desktop application and even create a file to work in. The workspace has a grid which makes lining items up much easier. It’s then just a matter of clicking and dragging items onto the workspace and then connecting them with lines to create your diagram. This produces very professional results very quickly and very easily. The line styles can be adjusted quickly and without any problem and the end result is professional looking.
How does the registration process work?
When you register for an account you sign up for a free 30 day trial, but don’t worry because you don’t need to enter your credit card details. If you do not pay before 30 days are up then this will revert back to a free account with more restrictions. Registration is pretty easy, you need to enter your name, email address and choose a password. You can also choose to enter the name of your business if you wish. The organization name must be unique if you are choosing to enter it. When registered you will be sent an email, you must confirm your account before you are able to share documents with anyone.
What does it cost to use the application?
Gliffy offer both a free and a premium service. The free service is much more limited and restricted than the premium service. With a free account you can only create and save public diagrams, this means that you cannot make any of your diagrams private. You will also have a maximum image upload size of 2MB where as with a premium account this is unlimited. The premium version is also free of adverts and the Gliffy logo which makes it much more professional for business use.
With the Premium account you can also log on using SSL which will ensure that your data is kept secure. For one user a premium account costs $5 per month, 10 users costs $25, and 25 users costs $60 per month. There are plans available right up to 1000 users.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Gliffy is ideal for businesses who want to create various types of diagrams. It’s possible to create network diagrams, site maps, hierarchies, floor plans and flow diagrams among plenty of other options. The premium account has many more benefits, including larger storage.

Gliffy is overall not a bad app but there are some major flaws with the collaboration model (e.g., easy to save over each other's work). I prefer LucidChart which has real-time collaboration, Visio import, etc.
