What can you use the app for?
Friendster is a fun virtual gaming community intended for teenagers and adults. The website hosts a number of fun web based games, from puzzle games to adventure games and others. The site is available in multiple languages and is linked to the OLX classifieds ads page. The application allows users to connect with other real players and compete or play alongside their friends in online games.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
With its headquarters in San Francisco, Friendster was founded in 2002. Friendster was the first popular social networking site. Google offered to buy Friendster in 2003, but they refused. Most users switched to other social networks like MySpace and Facebook because they introduced more innovative features. In May of 2011, the company repositioned itself into a social gaming site and discontinued user social network accounts.
What are the differences to other apps?
Friendster provides users with another place to get together and play games online. The application includes numerous games, many of which are easy to learn and can be played within the user’s browser, so no download is required. The addition of social elements that allow users to play online and communicate with other Friendster members adds more depth and appeal to the application.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
The Friendster website welcomes users with vibrant colors and cartoon style. The homepage entices newcomers with color images of game and cartoon characters. The green header that runs across the top of the page is highlighted by the cloud shaped Friendster logo, which contains the site name in stylish white text. The bottom of the page presents users with a list of icons and names for recently added games. The user can also view language options presented in parenthesis below the game title. A small drop down box along the bottom of the page allow the user to toggle between available languages.
How does the registration process work?
A new user can join the Friendster community by entering their email address in the space provided on the homepage (under the black “Join Friendster” header). After clicking the green and white “Join Now” button at the bottom of the form, the user is advised that they must check their email inbox to access an activation email. Once the user accesses the activation email and clicks on the link provided, they are taken to a form that asks for a password, first and last name, date of birth, gender and country location. The user can check a box to hide their last name. A note at the bottom of the form advises the user that by submitting their information they are agreeing to the Friendster terms of service and verifying that they are at least 16 years of age.
What does it cost to use the application?
Anyone can join the Friendster community for free. There are no subscription fees or other charges required to maintain an account. That being said, the site is not entirely cost-free. Users can purchase chips that are used in games on the site. User set up a wallet that gives them a place to manage and purchase additional chips. After setting up the wallet, the user is automatically given a one-time gift of 1,500 chips to use. The user can add chips whenever they like but are not required to purchase a specified amount to keep their account.
