Flixster is a social networking platform that’s designed and aimed specifically at film fans. Anyone who registers on the site can create their own profile, invite their friends, rate movies, rate actors and write their own reviews for certain movies. All of the content is written by other users which means that it’s a very valuable resource. You can also find out about the movie and find out when it’s playing at your local cinema. Because it’s a social networking site there are plenty of ways to interact with other users. There are also celebrity photos and trailers all of which can be watched on the internet. Flixster has lots of features which is why it’s becoming so popular among the movie community. There are over 50 million users registered on the site and there are over 1.5 billion ratings for various movies. Other movie sites including the once popular Fandango is now overshadowed by this giant. Of course sites like IMDB are still more popular although this is a slightly different site because it is based on information rather than peoples opinions. The combination of social networking with movies makes this site very popular and it will almost certainly continue to increase in popularity. Flixster was founded in January 2006 by Joe Greenstein and Saran Chari. The site has received a total of $7 million in funding from various sources including Lightspeed venture partners. The company is based in San Francisco, California. In 2011, Flixster was acquired by Warner Bros. There are more social networking sites than there are days in the year so why should you bother visiting this one? Well that’s because it’s aimed specifically at people who love movies. If you’re a film nut then you will find yourself right at home here. There are a few other film review sites however none are like this. The interface is very easy to use and the community is friendly and helpful. If you have problems doing anything then you just have to ask for help or read the tutorials in the forums. The site is easy to use and has a clean design. The one really annoying thing is that it keeps on trying to get you to invite your friends by putting in your email account password. Not everyone will want to do this so the pestering isn’t welcomed. It is however a very good site where you can find out lots of different film reviews including honest ratings from people that aren’t just professional movie critics. These reviews actually mean something and you should be able to use these to determine whether or not you would actually like to watch the film yourself. Registering for an account with Flixster is very easy and you don’t even have to if you have a my space account that you want to link to your account. You only need to enter your password once which is strange and the second box under the password is the security question test, so don’t type your password in there! If you enter something wrong on the form then for some reason the gender will be wiped so you have to click it again this is a little frustrating. There is then an option of inviting your contacts from your email or instant messenger accounts; you just have to enter your password. If you want to skip this then click the small “skip this” link at the bottom of the page. You will then have the option of customizing your profile which is what your friends will see. There will then be a small test where you have to rate movies, don’t worry there’s no right or wrong answers. They simply use this information to find out more about you. Flixster is completely free to use, it’s supported by adverts but these don’t cause any problem. Flixster could be interesting for anyone that loves movies and wants to talk about them with their friends. Of course this would be possible on another social networking site but this one is created specifically for films. Because it’s community driven the reviews actually should mean something and aren’t just written by people who are paid to write them.
